    摘要: A coupling arrangement (15, fig. 3) for restraining two elongate members such as sub-sea pipes (11 or 12) with respect to each other when subjected to hydrostatic end loads, and which is operable remotely by way of an ROV (16), comprises a housing (20) for receiving the pipes containing restraining means axially displaceable by fluid pressure to grip the pipe and also, at the gripping position, the housing wall (25) to prevent pipe retraction unless deliberately released. The restraint means carries on member (33) radially expandable collet means (34) which like the wall is profiled with fine pitch, shallow ridges and grooves provided by a helical screw thread and requiring little axial disturbance of the restraint means from the gripping position to engage. Preferably, the restraint member (33) and collet means (34) are moved further than pipe gripping means (45) to compress spring means (53) which is able thereafter to accommodate changes in hydrostatic end load on the pipe without varying the axial loading at the collet means.

    摘要: A connector (10) for pipes (40, 42) has two tubular parts (11,12) each with three angularly spaced inclined bores (16) intersecting the inner surface (8) of the parts and containing balls (22) engaging inclined wedge surfaces (18) and biassed axially by respective springs (21). In use the parts are drawn together by rotating nuts (15a) on studs (15) and the balls (23) grip the pipes (40,42) and compress seal (41), the balls (22) gouging into the pipes (40,42) at (50). The recesses (16) could be on the outer side of the parts (11,22) for engaging an external pipe. The balls (22) can move axially and radially in the recesses (16) for accommodating local ovality and engage surfaces (18) over an arc of circumference of the balls (22). The parts (11,12) need not be tubular and one part could be closed off to provide an end cap for the pipe in the other.

In use the balls 29 engage a pipe 41 and annular seals 25, 34 engage the pipe. The apertures can be axially elongated to accommodate a degree of ovality in the pipe. One or more apertures have diverging walls to accommodate pipe ovality. Each ball may have a separate inclined surface; the spring can be omitted. There could be only one set of balls. The seal 25 could engage a taper on body 12 so as to move radially inwards when pushed axially. The clamp can be inside the pipe. Arrangements are described which include one or more seals for engaging the pipe.
