Monitoring apparatus (10) is for monitoring a parameter, such as a drive current to a motor (12). Motor current flows through a series resistor (16) which provides a voltage signal at (18) which varies in response to variations in the motor current. An analysis circuit (22) is operable to analyse the rate of change of the voltage (18) and to provide an alarm signal at (24) in the event that the rate of change continues in excess of predetermined rate for a period in excess of a predetermined time. The alarm signal at (24) could, for example, be used to indicate that an automatic door being driven by the motor has been blocked by a person or object which could be injured or damaged.

Apparatus is described for controlling delivery of dangerous material, such as LPG, from a tanker 12 to a tank 14, through a pipe 16. A valve 18 is controlled by an arrangement 22. An operator 28 carries a radio transmitter 24 and must periodically transmit an appropriate signal to the control 22, otherwise the control 22 will time out and close the valve, also sounding an alarm. In accordance with the invention, the transmitter 24 is also provided with a timer, having a shorter count down time, and also re-set when the signal is sent to the control 22. The timer in the transmitter 24 alerts the operator 28 that a signal should be sent, giving the operator an opportunity to send a signal before the control 22 closes the valve 18. However, if the operator does not send a signal, or is incapable of doing so, the timer at 22 will assume that an emergency situation exists, and cease further delivery.

The wheel (18) is movably mounted so that the length can be changed for the path of the member (16) as it passes around the wheel (18), between the wheels (12, -14). Accordingly, the member (16) can be tightened or slackened around the wheels (12, 14), so that the wheels (12, 14) can be coupled to convey drive from one to the other, through the member (16), or disengaged, so that drive is not conveyed.

This recovers commutator pulses from the motor current, rejecting mains ripple and higher frequency noise. Commutator pulses are counted at (58). An elongate flexible member (22a) in the form of a cable or chain is connected to the aperture closure (12a) at an attachment point (24a). The elongate flexible member (22a) is also connected to a drive arrangement (not shown) operable to pull open the aperture closure (12a). Guide members (30, 32) define the path of the elongate flexible member (22a) between the attachment point 24a and the drive arrangement (not shown). At least one of the guide members (30) is a deflection member sufficiently close to the track (31c) to allow the attachment point (24a) to pass the deflection member (30) beyond the deflection member (30) when viewed from the said path, as the aperture closure (12a) closes and opens, thereby threading and unthreading the elongate flexible member (22a) from the deflection member (30).
