A sealing, trimming or finishing strip has a gripping part (2) made of extruded elastomeric material and advantageously incorporating an embedded reinforcement or carrier (10). In use, the gripping part (2) embraces a flange (22) such as framing a closable opening in a motor vehicle body, to support a soft sealing part (4) which is compressed by the closing door for the opening, thus forming a seal. On at least one inside side wall of the channel of the gripping part (2), one or more gripping elements (14) are integrally mounted. Each such gripping element comprises a thin web-like support (18) with an enlarged end or foot (16). Each foot presents a relatively large surface area which makes frictional area contact with the mount to hold the gripping part (2) in position. Each foot (16) has foot portions (16B, 16C) lying on opposite sides of a plane through the foot and through the support (18). Any 'pull-off force' tending to remove the strip from the flange (22) will tend to cause each foot (16) to pivot in a clockwise direction (as viewed in the Figure) on the support (18). One foot portion (16C) will tend to move away from frictional contact with the flange (22). The other foot portion (16B) will be forced into tighter frictional contact with the flange (22) and will thus provide high resistance to pull-off forces.

A safety system, such as for detecting obstructions in a window opening having a motor-slidable window glass (32) and for arresting the window glass in the presence of such an obstruction, comprises a glass-receiving channel (34). The base (48) defines a hollow chamber (60) incorporating a sensor (62). The sensor supports two substantially parallel longitudinally extending force-responsive sensing units (12, 14) each positioned immediately adjacent to a respective one of the side walls (44, 46) of the channel (34). If an obstruction in the window opening is carried upward by the slidable window pane (32), it will apply a force to the distal edge of one or both of the side walls (44, 46) and this force will be transmitted to the respective sensing unit (12, 14). Electrically conductive strips of the relevant sensing unit (12, 14) move into contact to produce an electrical signal which arrests the window glass. A third, similar, sensing unit (13) of the sensor (62) is positioned to produce a corresponding electrical signal when a force is applied to it by the distal edge of the closing window glass. This is used to indicate completion of travel of the window glass.

The first channel (46) embracingly grips the marginal edge of the outer panel part (6) to support the waist seal (24) in position. The second channel (48) embracingly grips interlocking legs of a decorative strip arrangement (56). The decorative strip arrangement (56) may comprise two separate parts (56A and 56B) presenting contrasting decorative appearances. The decorative strip arrangement (56) can thus be very easily mounted in position, and demounted, simply by clipping it into and unclipping if from the outer channel (48).

A hollow tubular longitudinally extending sealing portion (10) is attached to the outside of the mounting portion (8). When such a strip is bent to follow curves in the door frame, the increased tension in the mounting portion (8) at the curves may cause the sealing portion (10) to move inwardly of the curve into the position shown in the dotted line. In order to avoid this, the sealing strip, and particularly the mounting portion (8), is longitudinally compressed at positions corresponding to the positions where curves are to be formed in the strip. This local longitudinal compression helps to maintain the sealing portion (10) in its correct attitude.

A sealing and guiding arrangement for a slidable pane of window glass in a window opening forming the upper part of a vehicle door comprising two components (24, 26). Each component comprises a respective zone (A) for extending along the 'A' pillar of the vehicle and over the top of the window opening, and a respective zone (B) for extending along the 'B' pillar of the vehicle. The two components (24, 26) are injection-moulded with respective cross-sectional shapes so that when they are mounted together in side by side relationship they form a window channel for slidably receiving the pane of window glass. Internal lips (34) running along the side walls of the channel and flexible abutments (36) running along the base of the channel may be integrally moulded on the components (24, 26) with variable croos-sections along the length of the channel. Integrally injection moulded strips (42, 44) can be produced to provide inner and outer waist belts for the window opening. The components (24, 26) can be secured together by adhesive, welding, clips or mechanical interlocking means and/or by being mounted in a rigid support channel forming a frame for the window opening. Instead they can be produced in sufficiently rigid form to function without the use of a separate rigid frame.

The strip may be mounted in position on a mounting flange running around an opening in a motor vehicle body by forming it so that the side walls of the gripping portion (5) are initially splayed apart for ease of mounting on the flange, and are then forced together into gripping engagement with the flange by means of a tool which is externally passed along the length of the gripping portion and applies inwardly directed forces to its side walls. The side walls (10A, 10B) of the carrier are integrally connected to a central part (10C) in the base of the channel by inclined regions (10D, 10E). These inclined regions (10D, 10E) avoid sharp corners at the junctions between the side walls and the base of the carrier (10), and thus reduce the possibility that the force-applying fitting tool will crush the extruded plastics or rubber material (8) at such junctions, possibly causing damage and externally visible marks.
