It has two bearing columns (16) arranged on a chassis, two jibs (18) which can move vertically on the columns and horizontally extendible and a device (26) on the jibs (18) to transfer head frames. The head frame transfer device (26) comrpises two spaced boundary plates (32) interconnected by at least one cross-member (28) and fitted with guide rails (30) for the head frames and two spaced bearers (34) on a transverse support (22) connected to the boundary plates (32) and which can pivot in relation to the transverse support (22) to accept and transfer the head frames. In order to adapt the article changer to different weave widths, the distance between the boundary plates (32) can be adjusted by hand or by a motor. To this end, the cross-members (28) and the transvers support (22) consist of two simultaneously actuatable teles copic sections (28', 28''; 22', 22'').

The automobile carriage body (169) has two motor-driven, steerable driving wheels (12) which are mutually spaced apart in the longitudinal direction. In order to parallel the transport carriage (10), the carriage is at first positioned in the longitudinal direction in the yarn or cloth feeding path with respect to the weaving loom (32), then its driving wheels (12) are turned transversely to the moving direction. The transverse distances between two distance sensors (40) fixed to the carriage body and mutually spaced apart in the longitudinal direction on the one hand and two opposite reflecting surfaces (42) fixed to the loom on the other hand are measured without contact and compared in order to generate a difference signal. The difference signal may be optically displayed as a steering or driving indication and/or may be converted into a control signal for driving and/or steering the driving wheels (12) so as to parallel the transport carriage (10).
