In an ink jet recording apparatus, the generation of insufficiently charged or discharged drops is avoided which may occur when a charge controlling signal (print pulse) is switched within a forbidden zone of the period of the drop formation process. The region of the drop formation process period, during which the switching is permitted, is determined by detecting the charge carried by trains of drops which are produced by probe charge control signals of varying phase relative to the drop formation process.

An improved ink jet recording method comprises the steps producing at least one ink jet (6) which disintegrates into a series of minute drops, selectively charging the drops to determine whether an individual drop, in a recording mode, is intended to travel along a recording path to impinge onto a predetermined location on an ink receiving surface (12) or is prevented to produce a record on said surface, deflecting each charged drop by an electric deflecting field by an amount depending on the charge of the drop (6), and effecting relative transverse motion between the path of the record producing drops and the record surface, determining any deviation between said predetermined location and an actual location of impingement of the jet, and applying an adjustable bias charge being chosen so that the deflection of the drop caused by the action of said electric deflecting field on said bias charge carried by said drop minimizes said deviation.

Method and apparatus for making high resolution color prints using ink jet techniques. The method and apparatus of providing for precise control of the number of droplets of printing fluid which is deposited in a pixel on recoding paper. The precise control is achieved by incremental control of the print pulse width or time duration. Further precision can be obtained by synchronizing droplet formation with for example, the leading edge of the print pulse. The number of droplets charged during the time duration of the print pulse are the number of droplets which impinge on the paper and at the pixel location. The number of droplets creates therefore a color density. Use of a plurality of nozzles and ink colors will permit the production of very high resolution and high quality color prints.

An ink jet printing method is disclosed, wherein a record is produced by applying varying amounts of ink on a plurality of pixel locations of a record medium, said method comprising the steps:
a) generating an ink jet directed towards said record medium, said ink jet breaking up into a series of drops with a predetermined drop formation rate, b) applying an electric charge of predetermined magnitude to selected drops, c) deflecting each charged drop as a function of its charge to determine whether the drop travels along a recording path to reach said recording medium or is intercepted, d) producing relative transverse movement between said drop path and said recording medium, e) generating a first signal indicative of the drop formation rate, f) generating a second signal from said relative movement, the second signal being indicative that pixel position on the record medium is aligned with said drop path, g) deriving a density value for the aligned pixel position in response to said a second signal, h) generating a print pulse signal of predetermined length between leading and trailing edges in response to said derived density value and said first signal, said density value controlling the length and said first signal controlling the time of occurrence of the leading edge of said print pulse signal, i) controlling said charging step (b) by means of said print pulse signal.
To reduce the graininess of the image recorded by the jet, said first and second signals are synchronized to establish a predetermined time relationship between the time at which said density value deriving step (g) occurs and the time when the leading edge of the print pulse occurs.
