摘要: A light beam, preferably from a laser (68), is reflected from a target, which is a potential intruder. The time period for the beam to return to a light detector and the intensity of the reflected light is recorded (72). A computer analyses the measurements of distance and intensity. Intruders are detected based on changes in these measurements from those made during a 'learning' period. Targets are tracked using data collected in consecutive searches of the protected area. An alarm is sounded and/or a video camera is actuated. An acoustic sensor system (53) may be included, which is able to detect intruders with sound. A sensor fusion unit (74) can determine whether propagation conditions are adequate for the operation of the laser system (70), or alternatively whether the acoustic sensor system (52) should be used instead.
