The insert engages with the base to define an inlet through which a liquid can be drawn into the at least one pump chamber from a liquid source. The insert has a central core (176) and a resiliently flexible upper diaphragm member (184) projecting upwardly and radially outwardly from the core for contact with the cap to define the at least one pump chamber. The insert is movable between an initial resiliently biased configuration in which the volume of the at least one pump chamber (122, 123) is at a maximum and a deformed configuration in which the volume of the at least one pump chamber is at a minimum, in the deformed configuration, the upper diaphragm (184) is at least partially folded down about itself and/or the core. The at least one fluid inlet is formed at least partly by, or in a resiliency deformable portion (124, 125) of the valve housing. The deformable portion (124, 125) is arranged such that, in use when the valve is opened, it deforms from an initial resiliency biased configuration in which the fluid inlet (127, 128) has an initial cross sectional area to a deformed configuration in which the fluid inlet has an altered cross sectional area in response to a pressure differential between the interior of the housing and the exterior of the housing. The change in cross sectional area of the inlet can be made to vary independence on the pressure in the canister and can be used to control the rate of flow of the fluid through the inlet as the pressure in the canister falls during use.

An aerosol dispenser has a canister to contain a liquid product to be dispensed together with a propellant present at least partly as a gas and valve (10) to control the release of the liquid product from the canister. The dispenser also has a vapour phase tap for introducing a portion of the gaseous propellant into the liquid product as it is dispensed. The invention is characterised in that the dispenser has a flow control means for varying the rate at which the propellant gas is introduced into the liquid product through the vapour phase tape in dependence on the pressure of the contents of the canister. The flow control means can be used to reduce the amount of propellant gas bled into the liquid product, particularly when the dispenser is full and the pressure in the canister is high, as a means of conserving the propellant gas.
