摘要: A system (10) is provided for performing first-order authentication of articles marked with indicia (30) discernible in visible, ultraviolet, or infrared light or tagged with UV- or IR-sensitive chemicals. The first-order authentication system provides reliable visual authentication by providing for juxtaposition of the article-under-test (20) with a known reference-standard sample-specimen (90, 100, or 300), while the article-under-test (20) is illuminated by a suitable source (65 or 250) of radiation in the visible, ultraviolet, or infrared portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Thus, the system (10) facilitates comparison to differentiate a genuine article from a counterfeit article with first-order accuracy but at a substantially lower cost than that of automated authentication systems. Additionally, the system can be used in both portable and desk top embodiments. The system preferably has optional interchangeable holders (140 or 400) for various articles-under-test as well as an optional interchangeable holder (115) for various reference-standard sample-specimens. Some embodiments utilize structures incorporating split-image optics (200), superposed-image optics, and/or a blink-comparator.

摘要: Accessory apparatus (30, 310, 410, 510, 930) for authenticating articles is used in conjunction with existing readers or scanners of articles (10) bearing stored date (110), such as credit cards or identification cards. The apparatus is used with existing readers (20) of such cards, to perform authentication functions without replacing or obsoleting such existing readers. The accessory apparatus is disposed before, after, on, under, inside, or adjacent to existing reader apparatus, to have a view of the article whose data is to be read. Information in addition to the stored data is coded on the article in non-visible indicia (120) detected by the accessory authenticating apparatus. This coded additional information may be related to identification data stored in the article's normal storage, such as a magnetic stripe or embedded memory chip. The additional information is coded in combinations of predetermined characteristics of light emitted by the article when the article is irradiated with non-visible light (1115) by the accessory. The coded combinations are preferably complex combinations of the various radiation characteristics. Irradiating radiation is modulated at a high frequency above 10,000Hz for rapid authentication, and for a decoding bar codes.
