A coated cutting tool member, which comprises a hard substrate and, formed on the surface thereof through physical vapor deposition, a hard coating layer comprising a material selected from a composite nitride and a composite carbonitride of Ti and Al and having an average layer thickness of 1 to 10 mum, wherein the hard coating layer further comprises 0.002 to 0.1 atomic ratio of Zr and 0.0005 to 0.05 atomic ratio of one or more of Y and Ce, the ratios being relative to the total amount of metal elements. The coated cutting tool member not only exhibits excellent wear resistance when various types of steel, cast iron or the like are machined under a high speed cutting condition, which is associated with the generation of high heat, but also exhibits excellent chipping resistance even when the above machining is carried out also under a high load cutting condition such as high depth of cut or high feed cutting.

A sintered hard alloy base material for surface-coated gear cutting tool that is for use as a base material of surface-coated gear cutting tool composed of a base material and, superimposed on a surface thereof, a hard coating layer. The sintered hard alloy base material is comprised of a WC-betat-Co alloy wherein the content of Co constituting the bonding phase of the base material is in the range of 12 to 17 wt.% and the content of components excluding WC of betat solid solution constituting the hard phase of the base material is in the range of 15 to 20 wt.% and wherein the total content of Ta and Nb carbonitrides is in the range of 5 to 8 wt.%.
