摘要:
A tire press in one form has mounted on the press head beam a precision loader for the uncured tires. The beam moves vertically and then laterally or horizontally while maintaining the top mold section in parallelism with the bottom mold section for concurrent opening, loading of the uncured tire and discharge of the cured tire from the press. The invention includes a pair of tire chucks (110, 111) mounted on a loader beam (76) for precise vertical movement through an electric motor driven rack and pinion drive. The loader beam may be in turn mounted on the press head beam but through a lost motion connection. In this manner the loader is uncoupled from the press head during the final loading horizontal travel thereof to allow independent movement of the loader and press head. The loader is biased toward the press head by springs (67). When the press opens the loader moves with the press head but is stopped short of the full open position of the press head and is engaged by external alignment blocks (50) which then move the loader relative to the press head against the spring pressure during the final portion of movement of the press head to locate the loader precisely independently of any inconsistent full «open» position of the press or press beam. The loader beam is guided in to final loading position independently of the press beam in both a lateral and fore and aft direction. The loader beam thus floats in a horizontal plane in both an X and Y direction. In tiltback presses the loader may be mounted on a carriage supported independently of the press head.

A tire press, loader and method employs a stationary bottom mold section (181) and a vertically movable top mold section (176) which moves upwardly to open the press clearing the area therebetween for discharge of the cured tire and loading of the green or uncured tire. The press loads the green tire initially into the top mold section centering and holding the top bead of the green tire on the bead ring of the top mold section. To position the uncured tire for such top loading there is provided a loader (35) which engages the uncured tire at the lower shoulder of the tread area. The loader includes pivotally movable chuck sector assemblies (113), each mounted on a ring (98). The ring can readily be centered with respect to the axis of the mold sections and each assembly can be moved concurrently uniformly radially of the ring to accommodate tires of different sizes. The loader elevates the uncured tire from in front of the press and then positions it within the open press at the proper elevation with respect to the top mold section after the cured tire has cleared the press. The top mold section includes a mechanical chuck the segments (163) of which then extend to flower from cylindrical form to a conical form of increasing apex angle and then to a horizontal plate form in which they are locked. During opening of the press the bladder (161) after at least partial deflation and the bringing of the bladder clamp rings together overlies the bottom bead of the cured tire. This ensures that the tire properly remains on the bottom bead ring during stripping from the upper mold half and then the lower mold half, and as the bladder is drawn into the bladder well or bead lift can.

A dual cavity hydraulic tire press utilizes a single long stroke piston-cylinder assembly vertically positioned substantially in line with the center of gravity of the vertically movable upper mold sections, the latter being supported on the underside of the outer ends of a shallow V-shaped beam which is mounted for vertical movement on a readily removable column or post. In the closed position of the press the top mold cavities are locked to the base of the press by rotatable bayonet locks. Four short stroke hydraulic clamp piston-cylinder assemblies are positioned beneath each bottom mold section to achieve clamping pressure during cure. In one embodiment mechanical stops may be provided to achieve mold height adjustment and to preclude the molds opening significantly upon loss of fluid pressure to the clamping piston-cylinder assemblies. In another embodiment the clamp-piston-cylinder assemblies are mechanically adjusted to obtain the proper position for mold height adjustment. The press includes a safety bar which is supported from the top mold section for part of its movement with the bar being held stationary during initial opening movement of the top molds, and then picked up to be in a position just below extended segment molds if employed. The clamp-piston-cylinder assemblies are provided with extended coolant passages between the clamp actuating fluid and the heat of the mold cavity to preclude degradation of the fluid employed. The isolation of the clamp pressure at four equally spaced points beneath the bottom platen enables the platens and molds to be more efficiently encased with insulating materials not subject to high pressure during cure. The position of the clamp-piston-cylinder assemblies as well as the piston-cylinder assembly opening and closing the press preclude hydraulic fluid contamination of the uncured or cured tires passing through the press. With the present invention, a tire curing press of substantially less weight, envelope and energy consumption can be provided.

A tire building machine otthe expandable bead lock type employs an elastomeric specially shaped radially expanding bead lock (43) including a shaping and turning bladder (48) which includes an air passage system therethrough. The elastomeric bead lock is confined for radial expansion in an annular outwardly opening chamber (114) in the form of an isos- celestrapezoid in radial section with the elastomeric bead lock being of similar configuration and expanded by direct application of air pressure within the chamber. The configuration of the annular chamber and the bead lock compensate for stretching of the bead lock upon enlargement. The edges of the bead lock atthe axial sides of the chamber are undercutfor flexibility while the walls (70,71) of the chamber are specially coated to maintain the seal. The bead lock incorporates interconnected metallic segment side plates (76, 77) which not only limit the stroke of the moving seal but insure stability axially of the bead and provide the desired concentricity. The bladder is pressurized through an annular air passage system and sealed conduit (137) extending radially through the pressure chamber inside the bead lock.

A tire building machine and method utilizes an annular rotatable expandable drum or deck (12). Associated with each deck edge is a bladder assembly (17, 18) which, when inflated, causes the portion of the tire material overlapping the deck edge (15, 16) to fold back upon itself at such edge to form a folded edge, as in a belt folding machine, or to wrap around a bead, as in a tire building machine. When not inflated the bladders lie flat and extend axially of the deck edges and radially slightly interiorly of the deck surface. In order to facilitate the winding of the material onto the drum from a suitable servicer, either automatically or manually, the deck is provided with lateral rigid extension (30, 31) which overlie the bladder assemblies when not inflated and which are designed to underlie the leading and/or trailing edge of the tire material. The lateral extensions may be provided with vacuum or magnetic grippers (142), the latter employed with steel belt material, either of which may be activated or deactivated or continuously operative. In this manner, the lateral extensions permit the machine to operate in a substantially automatic mode both as to winding and splicing. Because of the bias angle at which the material may be cut, the lateral extensions may be positioned substantially circumferentially offset from each other. Because the lateral extension would normally interfere with the action of the bladder asem- blies when inflated, such lateral extensions are mounted for retraction and/or elevation to clear the path of the bladder assemblies when inflated.

A loader for a tire curing press includes a support (28), a loader frame (20) mounted on the support for vertical and horizontal movement, a loader basket (18) mounted on the loader frame for engaging, holding and releasing a tire, a first actuator (48) for vertically moving the loader frame, a second actuator (44) for horizontally moving the loader frame into and out of the press when open, and a mechanical guide (86) for guiding the loader frame from an over-center position in the press to a center position as the loader frame is moven vertically in the press. The loader frame is supported on a spline shaft (28) for movement therealong and rotation therewith by ball bushings (32) riding in the grooves ofthespline shaft. The loader basket comprising a plurality of generally radially movable shoes (116, 182), an adjustable stop (146, 198) for limiting radial movement of each shoe and two forms of an adjustment mechanism for simultaneously and uniformly adjusting the adjustable stops. One form of adjustment uses a knob (164) and flexible shafts (156, 158), while the other uses a crank (212) and rigid shafts (207) connected to the stops universal joints (208).

@ A tire press, loader and method wherein a green tire is positioned by the loader between vertically separated mold sections (124, 223) and then engaged and held at the top bead thereof in registered contact with an upper bead ring (149, 231) of the press mold by a green tire bead elevator (164) in the press head. While such registered contact is maintained, the upper bead ring and bead elevator raise and hold the green tire to the upper mold section as the loader axially clears the green tire and withdraws from the press. After such transfer of the green tire to the press head, the press partially closes to bring the bottom bead of the green tire against the lower bead ring of the press mold for subsequent shaping of the green tire and final closure of the press. The bead elevator includes a radially expandable chuck (170) mounted for vertical movement in the press head which operates, when expanded, to engage and move the top bead of the green tire into registered or fully seated contact with the upper bead ring. The loader (54) employed to introduce the green tire into the press includes a relatively narrow fluid expandable ring grip (90) for substantially continuously gripping the outside of the tread leaving both bead areas free for centering, register and seating during the loading, seating and shaping process. The loader also has the facility for elevating the green tire into contact with the upper bead ring once in axial alignment with the mold sections and for removing a cured tire from the lower bead ring after transfer of the green tire to the press head.
