    摘要: A two-stage punch accomplishes the two-step process of sheet deformation and nut flaring to attach the nut to the sheet in a single stroke of an assembly press. The punch comprises an outer cylindrical sleeve which captivates a resiliently biased center punch. When the punch is moved downward into contact with the sheet, an embossing ring on the sleeve deforms the sheet material around an aperture in the sheet. When the punch is moved farther downward, a pointed end of the center punch extends beyond the embossing ring and into forcible contact with the nut. The nut is thereby flared capturing the sheet between flared edges of the nut and a nut flange.

    摘要: Precise motion of the ram of a fastener press is controlled by high torque and low torque motors for high speed/low force and high force pressing of the ram by the ram, respectively. The high torque motor means drive passes through a bidirectional overrunning clutch. The clutch is controlled by the relative motion of the two separate motor drive speeds of which are regulated by a controller. The clutching motion is therefore controlled only by the relative speed of its drive versus driven components. This provides an extremely smooth and responsive transition between high speed/low force and low speed/high force operation of the ram so that the pressing cycle can be as fast and efficient as possible.

The connector is a clinch-type fastener including a shank having a displacer head at one end and an endface at the opposite end, the head having a planar top surface and being the largest diameter of the fastener. An undercut groove is located on the shank immediately below the head and a pluralit of axially-extending broaching teeth on the shank are located immediately below the undercut groove. The diameter of the broaching teeth is greater than the diameter of the undercut groove but less than the diameter of the head. At the end of the shank is a planar endface immediately below the broaching portion.

    摘要: A process for cold forging a metal fastener such as a self-clinching standoff includes a punch and die set at the final head trimming station which produces the shear burr only on the underside of the fastener head where it is not visible after installation. At this station, a fastener blank (16) having a tubular barrel and a temporarily formed circular head is placed into a bore of the punch (23) with a barrel of the fastener residing in the bore with the underside of the circular head abutting an end face of the punch. The forging apparatus then moves the die toward the top side of the fastener until a polygonal cutting edge of the die (12) shears metal from around the edges of the circular head of the fastener blank. Movement of the die stops when the cutting edge lies beyond the underside of the head of the fastener. At this point, a knock-out pin (21) which is reciprocal within the bore of the punch forcibly ejects the fastener through a passage in the die to a point beyond an opposite side of the die. The forging apparatus then moves the die away from the punch and, once the die is clear of the punch, a stripper sleeve (25) which is reciprocal about the outside surface of the punch moves from a retracted position over the end of the punch removing a residual scrap ring (18) from around the outside of the punch.
