The invention relates to a retractable roof for passenger vehicles, especially a hard top for two-seater convertibles, roadsters or similar, comprising a dimensionally stable shell consisting of a roof part and rear support pillars which are rigidly connected to the roof part at an obtuse angle, a rear window for a window opening and an accommodating area located perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle directly behind the seats, wherein the roof part can be moved in and out with the support columns thereof by means of guiding and drive means. The roof part is kinematically and restrictively guided on a guide track with the support pillars thereof. The aim of the invention is to provide a retractable roof of the above-mentioned variety which exhibits the required structural rigidity yet which is lightweight, operates smoothly and is mechanically simply and easy to use while at the same time being compact. Said aim is achieved by making the guide tracks, which consist of rails, extend in a straight line in the direction of the boot, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, whereupon the support pillars of the roof part are displaceable thereon by means of guide carriages fixed to the support pillars and are rotationally guided about a transversal axis which is horizontal in respect to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, and by allocating a separate control track with endless guiding means to each guide carriage in order to produce a combined translational and/or rotational movement of the support pillars. The guiding means are coupled to each other in a positive fit by means of a common shaft, which is driven by a drive mechanism, in order to produce a synchronous movement. When a rear stop is reached, the front end of the roof part can pivot into the accommodating area in a position which is approximately perpendicular to the rear of the seat group and the support columns can be lowered inside said accommodating area.

The invention relates to a retracting roof (1) for passenger motor vehicles, particularly a hard roof for two-seated or multiple-seated cabriolets, roadsters, or similar, comprising a dimensionally stable shell which is provided with a roof part (2) and rear support columns (3) that are connected to the roof part at an obtuse angle, a rear window (11) for a window opening, and a separate first and second stowing space (9) which is disposed immediately behind the seats perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and into which and out of which the roof part (2) with the support columns (3) and the rear window (11) can be moved by guiding means and driving means. The roof part (2) and the support columns (3) thereof are forcibly guided in a kinematic manner along a guideway (6). The aim of the invention is to improve said retracting roof (1) in such a way that the structure obtains the required stiffness at a lower weight and in a compact construction while making said roof (1) smooth-running and mechanically simple and operable. Said aim is achieved by extending the first stowing space (9) all the way to the area located lateral to the seating unit (8) along a curve that is generated correspondingly by the downward and upward movement of the roof part and support columns. The rails (6) which are mounted in a fixed manner on the body structure parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle by means of vertical support plates (7) form guiding devices for the support columns (3), said guiding devices running laterally past the seating unit (8) within the stowing space. The roof part (2) is kinematically and restrictively guided on rails (5) in the accommodating area (8) on a guide track. The aim of the invention is to provide a retractable roof of the above-mentioned variety which exhibits the required structural rigidity yet which is lightweight, operates smoothly and is mechanically simply and easy to use while at the same time being compact. Said aim is achieved by extending the accommodating area (8) along a movement curve correspondingly produced by the upward and downward movement of the roof part (2) as far as the area to the side of the seat group (7). The rails (5), which are secured to the body structure by means of carrier plates (6) vertical and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, form guides for the rear ends of the roof extending to the side of the seat group (7) for the rear ends of the roof part which are guided on the rails (5) by means of guide carriages arranged on the ends and the rear window (9) is directly integrated into the roof part such that it can be inserted and extracted therefrom.
