The invention refers to a process for decolourisation of sugar solutions with simultaneous removal of calcium ions from the solution using an ion exchange resin. The sugar solutions containing anionic colourants and soluble calcium salts, are passed through a strong base anionic resin under carbonate form. The regeneration of the strong base anionic resin, used in this process, is a three step procedure. In the first step the resin is submitted either to a carbonic dioxide bubbling or to an acid treatment in order to remove the calcium carbonate from the resin ; the second step employs a sodium chloride solution and the third one a sodium carbonate solution.
