A tension leg platform (TLP) (100, comprising buoyant columns (110, 510, 610, 710, 810, 910, 1010, 1110, 1210, 1310) having a generally polygonal transverse cross section and buoyant pontoons (112, 512, 712, 812, 912, 1112, 1212, 1312) interconnecting adjacent columns. In certain embodiments at least one axis of said polygonal transverse sections is generally radially aligned with a central vertical axis of the hull. Some embodiments comprise tendon porches (30a, 30b, 130, 930, 930', 1030, 1130) mounted on different surfaces of the buoyant columns. In one embodiment of the TLP, tendon porches (1192) are mounted to the outboard surface of the pontoons (1112). Also disclosed is a semi submersible (200, 300) comprising buoyant columns (210) with generally rectangular transverse section, an inboard surface, an outboard surface and a pair of opposing side surfaces, a plurality of pontoons, connected between adjacent columns. The pontoons of the tension leg platform and the semi-submersible are generally rectangular in cross section and the outboard, generally vertical surface of each pontoon may be connected to a side surface of an adjoining column at a location which is substantially inboard of the outermost face of the column (210).

A fairing for the reduction of vortex-induced vibration and the minimization of drag about a substantially cylindrical element immersed in a fluid medium. The fairing also eliminates the galloping phenomenon typically associated with a teardrop- shaped fairing. The fairing having a U-shaped cylindrical shell with opposing edges defining a longitudinal gap and parallel fins extending outwardly from the opposing edges of the shell, the parallel fins being positioned so as to reduce vortex-induced vibration, minimize drag and to eliminate the galloping phenomenon on the cylindrical element.

Flexible hang-off arrangement is provided for a catenary riser suspended from an offshore or inshore platform, which includes floating or fixed platforms, vessels or/and buoys. The bending loads in the top segments (209) of the said riser are reduced by incorporating a pivot (201) at the riser hang-off. Pressure containing welded, bolted, rolled or swaged pipe spools transfer fluids, including hydrocarbons between the riser and the platform. Along significant spool lengths the tangents to the center lines of said spools are orthogonal to and offset from the tangent to the center line of the riser at the hang-off. The said pressure containing spools include arbitrary looped, spiral (237) and helicoidal designs that are subject to torsion.

For use with a subsea well incorporating an external condutor pipe (12) extending upwardly above the seabed, a protector apparatus is set forth. A longitudinally split, flange, equipped, bolt joined elongate conductor clamp is supported on a frame (16) at the bottom thereof and has a plurality of appended upstanding braces (70). The bottom frame is adapted to be rested on a seabed and held in place by a number of anchors (20) driven into the seabed at corners. This apparatus is selectively installed after completion of a well wherein the condutor pipe extends above the bottom, and the apparatus is subsequently removed after protecting the pipe after drilling but before installation of a platform.

A disconnectable buoyant turret mooring system for an FPSO is vulnerable to damage from collisions between the buoy and the buoy turret cage during mating and de-mating operations. It is therefore desirable that the buoy separate quickly from the turret of the FPSO vessel during a disconnect operation. A buoy turret cage is provided with a certain degree of porosity that allows a flow of seawater from the outside of the receptor to the inner surface of the receptor. Introducing water in this way relieves the suction forces and allows for a quicker separation of the buoy from the turret of the FPSO vessel, minimizing the time during which an uncontrolled collision between the buoy and the FPSO vessel is most likely. Filling a portion of the turret above the mooring buoy with water prior to releasing the buoy also decreases the separation time.
