摘要:
A system for monitoring stroke of a spring brake actuator of a vehicle comprises a spring brake actuator having a push rod, wherein pneumatic activation of the spring brake actuator causes the push rod to further extend out of the spring brake actuator to thereby activate braking of the vehicle, and wherein pneumatic deactivation of the spring brake actuator causes the push rod to retract back into the spring brake actuator to thereby deactivate braking of the vehicle. A first magnet and a second magnet are coupled to the push rod, and the second magnet is spaced apart from the first magnet. A sensor is configured to sense a magnetic field created by the first magnet and the second magnet, and a controller is configured to determine stroke of the push rod based upon the magnetic field.

A spring brake actuator (10) is for braking a wheel of a vehicle. The spring brake actuator (10) has an axially elongated housing (12) having a parking brake chamber (34) and a service brake chamber (36); a main compression spring (54) in the parking brake chamber (34); a flexible diaphragm (38) in the parking brake chamber (34); and a pressure plate in the parking brake chamber (34), the pressure plate (58) located axially between the main compression spring (54) and the flexible diaphragm (38). The flexible diaphragm (38) has a contoured portion (100) that inhibits radial shifting of the pressure plate (58) with respect to the flexible diaphragm (38).

A pneumatic actuator (100) includes a housing (116) defining a chamber (118). A diaphragm (124) is positioned within the chamber (118). A rod member (105) is attached to the diaphragm (124) and is movable between a first position and a second position. A cam member (101) is attached to the diaphragm (124) and to the rod member (105). The cam member (101) has a cam surface. A deflection rod (102a) has a first end portion and a second end portion, where the first end portion of the deflection rod (102a) is attached to the housing (116). A follower (106a) is attached to the second end portion of the deflection rod (102a). The follower (106a) engages the cam surface of the cam member (101) so as to urge the rod member (105) towards the second position.

A rotationally adjustable brake actuator includes a pressure housing with a circumferential rim, a non-pressure housing having a second circumferential rim, and a diaphragm disposed therebetween, where a retaining ring holds the respective housings against each other such that the first rim abuts the second rim, but where the respective housings are able to be rotated with respect to the other. Further, the retaining ring includes a radially-oriented hole and a stop pin that is inserted into the hole and engages the pressure housing to prevent further rotation.

A removable seal (10) for attachment to the push rod opening (20) of a service brake actuator (25) that is to be used with a disc brake system. The seal allows the service brake actuator to enjoy the benefits of having breather holes (22) in its housing wall while preventing any unwanted contaminants brought in through such holes from being transmitted to the attached disc brake mechanism. The seal is a hollow molded piece in the form of a tubular insert (10) made of a slightly deformable material that fits into the central opening (20) in the lower service brake housing through which the push rod (40) extends. Flanges (13,15) on the insert sealingly engage the wall of the service brake housing, and a central bore sealingly engages the push rod. The insert may include a separate internal bushing (31) made of durable material which supports at least one annular seal (17) for engaging the push rod. The seal of the present invention prevents dirt, debris, moisture or other foreign materials from being transmitted by the push rod to the outside of the service brake actuator housing where they could contaminate the sensitive internal parts of the attached disc brake system, thereby reducing the risk of failure and prolonging the useful life of the disc brake system.

A method and apparatus is disclosed for securely attaching existing central aluminum or steel adaptors (35) for air brake actuators (30) to existing steel service brake housings (31), existing steel emergency brake housings (32), or both without major modification to either housing or the adaptor. An annular shoulder (33) with an elongated annular flange (34) above it is provided in the steel brake housing, and the aluminum adaptor is provided with a small outwardly extending annular lip (36). A flexible diaphragm (40) is first placed directly on the shoulder of the steel brake housing. The aluminum or steel adaptor is then placed on top of the diaphragm such that the annular lip of the adaptor fits inside the annular flange of the housing. A slightly deformable annular steel piece (45) is then placed around the aluminum adaptor so that it comes to rest against the annular lip while also touching the annular steel flange of the housing. One or more breaks may be provided in the annular steel piece to facilitate placing it over the aluminum adaptor. A weld is then applied to connect the annular steel piece to the annular flange, thereby holding the aluminum or steel adaptor and diaphragm securely in place.
