The present invention provides a method for synthesizing heat shock protein-peptide complexes comprising the steps of: adding a shock protein to a denatured protein matrix to bind the heat shock protein to the denatured protein matrix; and adding a complexing solution comprising a peptide to elute a heat shock protein-peptide complex. The present invention also provides a heat shock protein-peptide complex synthesized by the method of the invention. In addition the present invention provides an apparatus for synthesizing heat shock protein-peptide complexes comprising a heat shock protein complex bound to a denatured protein matrix. The present invention also provides a method for treating an allergic disease in which a heat shock protein-antigen complex is administered to a mammal in an amount sufficient to reduce the susceptibility of the mammal to a Th2 response for the allergic disease. The method of the present invention can be used either to prevent an invididual from having an allergic reaction to an allergic disease or to reduce the effects of an allergic disease in an individual already suffering from the allergic disease.

A method for purifying heat shock protein complexes is provided which comprises the steps of adding a solution containing heat shock protein complexes, in which heat shock proteins are associated with peptides, polypeptides, denatured proteins or antigens, to a column containing an ADP matrix to bind the heat shock protein complexes to the ADP matrix and adding a buffer containing ADP to the column to remove the heat shock protein complexes in an elution product. Additionally a method for synthesizing heat shock protein complexes and purifying the complexes so produced is provided which comprises the steps of adding heat shock proteins to an ADP matrix column to bind them to the matrix, adding a solution of peptides, polypeptides, denatured proteins or antigens to the column to bind them to the heat shock protein as heat shock protein complexes and adding a buffer containing ADP to the column to remove the complexes in an elution product.

A set of blends for extinguishment of fires, suppression of explosions, and inertion against fires and explosions is disclosed. The blends are comprised of a bromine-containing component and a fluorine-containing component. The bromine-containing component is comprised of one or more hydrobromoalkanes, hydrobromoalkenes, and/or hydrobromoarenes. The fluorine-containing component is comprised of one or more fluorine-containing halocarbons, which may also contain chlorine. Specifically provided as fluorine-containing halocarbons are saturated and unsaturated hydrochlorofluorocarbons, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons, perfluoroethers, hydrofluoroethers, and/or hydrofluoropolyethers. This provides a blend that mimics the fire and explosion protection action of halons and hydrobromofluorocarbons without the environmental impact associated with these compounds, which contain bromine and fluorine in the same molecule.

A D type optical fiber (10') was adhered to a conductive layer (18) through the flat side of the optical fiber (10') and the cladding (16) was removed in area (20) without damage to the core (14). Electrical connection is made through the projection (24) which allows good contact when used alone or in conjunction with a previously deposited conductor (20). The cladding removal process may also be done on both sides when a round optical fiber is used rather than a D type fiber. The electrooptical devices made using this process may also include bragg gratings which may be impressed using an applied voltage, UV radiation, thermal heating or a combination of any of these.

The present invention provides methods and apparatus for defining a single structure (11) on a semiconductor wafer by spatial frequency components whereby some of the spatial frequency components (12-16) are derived by optical lithography and some by interferometric lithography techniques. Interferometric lithography images the high frequency components while optical lithography images the low frequency components. Optics collects many spatial frequencies and the interferometry shifts the spatial frequencies to high spatial frequencies. Thus, because the mask does not need to provide high spatial frequencies, the masks are configured to create only low frequency components, thereby allowing fabrication of simpler masks having larger structures. These methods and apparatus facilitate writing more complex repetitive as well as non-repetitive patterns in a single exposure with a resolution which is higher than that currently available using known optical lithography alone.

A surgical tool for cutting, shearing or clamping has a body (10) formed of a single length of flexible steel and a collet (40) mounted perpendicularly between the leaves (12, 14) of the body (10) and affixed between the leaves (12, 14) near their rearward ends. The leaves (12, 14) are normally bowed outward, so that squeezing them together lengthens the body (10), thus producing relative displacement between the forward ends of the body (10) and collet (40), respectively. The bifurcated forward end of the collet (40), which extends through an aperture (22) in a bridge (16) joining the leaves (12, 14), terminates at a pair of jaws (48) having inwardly working surfaces (50) and outwardly facing cam surfaces (52). The cams (52) are engaged by the sides (24) of the aperture (22), which drive the jaws (48) together when the leaves (12, 14) are squeezed toward one another.

The present invention provides novel haloenol lactones that are effective as active site inhibitors of cholesterol esterase. By inhibiting cholesterol esterase the inhibitors of the present invention provide a new approach to the treatment of hypercholesterolemia through limiting the bioavailability of dietary cholesterol.
