A booklet 32 is produced from a pre-printed sheet 10 by folding the sheet with at least one but preferably two crease-lines 11 extending in the line of advancement of the sheet. The crease-lines 11 are squeezed by a roller nip 14 and then the sheet is fed to and gripped by a rotatable mandrel 15. The mandrel is rotated to wind the sheet around the outer surface thereof and then the wound sheet 21 is removed from the mandrel and is squeezed through a further roller nip 23 so as to form a substantially flat booklet pre-form 24. The leaves of the pre-form are bound together along at least one compressed folded edge 28 of the pre-form thereby forming a booklet spine and the other three edges are slit open, 25,26,27. Alternatively two spines are formed respectively along the two compressed edges of the pre-form and two or more booklets are formed by cutting through the pre-form part-way between the spines and also slitting open the other two edges 30 of the pre-form.

Apparatus and for and a method of marking a web (10) advancing along a path includes a monitoring station (11) at which the web (10) is observed and including a signal generator arranged to produce an appropriate mark signal on detecting a location to be marked as well as the nature of the required mark. A tab applicator (20) is disposed downstream of the monitoring station for applying an adhesive tab (34) to the web in a timed relationship to the advancement of the web so as to adhere the tab (34) to the required location on the web. The tab applicator includes an online printer receiving a signal from the signal generator, whereby an applied tab may carry appropriate indicia for the location being marked.

The weigh head assembly disclosed comprises a base member 10 on which a cantilever beam 25 is mounted for bearing strain gauges 26 connected in conventional circuitry for measuring the bending of the beam. Two parallel links 13, 14 are pivotally mounted at vertically spaced locations on the upright base member 10 and are connected together by a bridging member 19 to which the free end of the cantilever beam 25 is connected. Loads to be weighed are imposed on the upper end of the bridging member 19 through a mechanism not shown. A plate 31 is attached to the sides of the bridging member 19 and carries pairs of projecting studs 40, 41 and 42, 43 from which test weights 47, 55, can be temporarily deposited together or sequentially in order to test and calibrate the weigh head assembly. The test weights are normally supported on pivotal platforms 44, 56 which can be lowered to deposit the weights on the studs for a test weighing by solenoids 53, 62. In order to eliminate the possibility of errors caused by the application of bending moments to the cantileverbeam by the test weights 47, 55, the strain gauge beam 25 is connected to the bridge member 19 equidistantly between the parallel links 14, 15.

A leaflet is produced from a pre-printed sheet 10 of material by folding the sheet with at least one crease-line 11 along the line of advancement of the sheet but preferably with two or more such crease-lines 11 so that the sheet is fan-folded. The crease-lines 11 are squeezed by a roller nip 14 and then the sheet is fed into a diametral slot 16 in a mandrel 15 of elliptical cross-section. The leading edge 17 of the sheet is gripped within the slot 16 and then the mandrel is rotated to wind the sheet around the outer surface thereof. The wound sheet is then removed from the mandrel 15 and is squeezed through a roller nip 20 so as to form a substantially flat folded leaflet.

Apparatus for counting sheets in stack (17) thereof and inserting tabs (27) between the sheets at predetermined counts, as well as a tabbing method, uses a rotatable counting disc (10) engageable with an edge region of the stack and including a sheet transfer slot (12) to transfer the next sheet to be counted from one face of the disc to the opposed face, upon rotation of the disc. There are means (30) to count the number of sheets transferred and also to advance the disc relative to the stack, as the counting progresses. A tabber (31) is arranged to insert a tab (27) between two sheets of the stack (17) when a predetermined sheet count has been achieved, which tabber (31) projects a tab in a generally radially outward direction with respect to the disc (10), immediately adjacent one face (13) of the disc and in a timed relationship to the rotation thereof. The disc includes a tabbing recess (20) in its one face (13) and into which a projected tab is received for insertion between the last and next sheets to be counted, at the moment of projection of the tab.

The disclosure relates to a sheet separating device for a stack counting apparatus including a counting head to traverse a corner of a stack and having a horizontal suction blade (13) with a suction orifice (22) on its upper surface for insertion in the stack and oscillatable about a horizontal axis (16) to separate a corner of a sheet in the stack adhered by the suction port to the blade from the next sheet. A wiping pin (14) is driven in an elongate orbit around the blade (13) from the trailing edge (19) thereof over the upper surface to the leading edge (17) and along the underside of the blade to transfer a corner of a sheet adhered to the upper surface of the blade from the upper surface to the lower surface and a counting device is arranged to count the number of sheets transferred by the pin. In order to minimise damage to the stack by the engagement of the blade (13) and pin (14) in the stack the path of the movement of the pin from the upper surface to the lower surface adjacent the leading edge of the blade is in a generally vertical direction after which the pin moves generally horizontally close to the underside of the blade whilst the blade remains substantially horizontal and the blade tilts downwards to separate the corner of a sheet on it from the sheet above only after the pin has moved beyond the undersurface of the blade and the pin then moves over the upper side of the blade towards the leading edge thereof as the blade returns to the horizontal.

摘要:
The disclosure relates to an air pressure sensor for use particularly in a batched counting apparatus for counting sheets or signatures in a "shingled" stream and comprising an air passage (21) terminating in a probe (17) having an orifice (19) to ride over the surface of the "shingled" stream of sheets. The jet (26, 27) delivers air from a supply line into the passage and branch passage (28) located adjacent the jet contains a floating element (31) which moves up and down the passage in accordance with static air pressure in the passage. The element is arranged to make or break a beam in a photo-electric cell arrangement (12) to operate a counting device. As the probe rides from one sheet or signature to the next, the air pressure in the passage (21) drops and the result in the fall in pressure in the branch passage causes the element (31) to fall thereby triggering the photo-electric cell to operate the counting device. The sensor is extremely sensitive, responding when passing from sheet to sheet of very thin paper and it is capable of operating at high speed.
