A removable rivet (11) of the type comprising a shank (12) and a preformed head (13) at at least one end of the shank (12), the shank (12) being insertable through workpieces (19) and being capable of being permanently deformed to rivet the workpieces (19) together, includes the following features in combination:- an annular groove (23) at the junction of the shank (12) and the head (13), the annular groove (23) extending radially inwardly of the diameter of the shank (12), thereby to facilitate separation of the head (13) from the shank (12) when a drill (22) of diameter substantially equal to that of the shank (12) is applied to the head (13) of an installed rivet (11) co-axially with the shank (12) until it meets the annular groove (23); an annular rim (25) carried by the head (13) of the rivet (11) for co-operating with drilling apparatus (31, 32) comprising a drill (22), thereby to locate the drill (22) co-axially with the annular groove(23); and abutment faces (28) carried by the head (13) of the rivet (11) for engaging dogs (34) a non-rotating sleeve (34) of the drilling apparatus thereby to prevent rotation of the rivet (11) under the influence of the rotating drill (22) (Figure 4).

A fastener comprises a pin having a head 14 and swaging grooves 16 on its shank, together with a collar 12 which is swaged into the groove 16 to lock the collar to the pin and thereby secure together two metal sheets 23, 24. The underhead face of the pin head is formed with a projecting annular rib 28. When the pin head is urged towards the adjacent sheet 24 during the fastener installation process, the rib 28 enters the sheet 24 and engages therewith. This enhances resistance to relative slipping of the sheet 24 with respect to the pin and the other sheet 23, thereby enabling the use of an oversize hole 26 in the sheet 24. The collar 12 may alternatively or additionally be provided with a similar rib 29 for a similar purpose (Figure 1).

A pin-type fastener (11,12) capable of dual-function comprises a pin (11) which can be used in fastening workpieces (24, 27) together. The pin (11) has a pintail (17) capable of being removed from the remainder (15) of the pin (11) after the pin (11) has been installed as a fastener in a workpiece, and the pintail (17) can then be used as a weldstud and welded to the same workpiece as the pin-type fastener, or to another workpiece. The pin-type fastner can be a two-part fastener, for example a lockbolt including a nut or swageable collar engageable with the pin. The pin (11) may have a- breakneck (16) to facilitate removal of the pintail (17). The pin (11) itself may be a weldstud. In use, the pin-type fastener (11, 12) is installed in a workpiece (27) and the pintail (17) is removed, and then the pintail (17) is used as a weldstud, being welded to a workpiece (36). Electric welding is employed. Advantage:- economy through second use of pintail as a stud.
