摘要:
An aramid multifilament yarn, preferably poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide), is coated with a water swellable superabsorbent material. The swelling value of the yarn is at least 60. The superabsorbent provides water blocking capability to the yarn, so that it is suitable for use as a strength member in water tight optical communication cables. The yarn is made by successively treating an aramid yarn with a waterin-oil emulsion, a superabsorbent material being present in the water phase of the emulsion, and removing the liquid components from the treated yarn by evaporation.

Found are multifilament yarns other than aramid yarns having high swelling values, which makes them suitable for use as a waterblocking reinforcement in communications cables. The yarns are characterised by containing on their surface a layer of a superabsorbent material comprising of from 0.3 to 40 wt.% of the yarn calculated on the dry weight of the yarn. The yarns are obtainable by applying to the surface of a yarn a layer of a water-in-oil emulsion which contains a superabsorbent material in its aqueous phase, the yarn having a swelling value of 100 or higher.

Claimed is a process for manufacturing waterproof, water vapour permeable, three-dimensional articles, such as shoes and gloves, of copolyetherester, in which process a three-dimensional mould is treated once or several times with an aqueous dispersion of a copolyetherester in a manner analogous to that employed for a latex dispersion in the rubber industry, followed by heating to obtain a continuous film, after which the moulded article is removed from the mould after cooling, use being made of a dispersion which can be obtained by diluting a solution of the copolyetherester in N-methyl pyrrolidone with a preferably at least partially water miscible anti-solvent, optionally followed by wholly or partially replacing the liquid phase with water, dilution with water, and the removal of the solvent employed if so desired. The articles are suited to be used as such or as inserts in laminates in the form of garments, such as gloves.
