The invention concerns a method of controlling a packet transmission, and a sender and a computer program product to execute said method. A packet transmission in a packet switched network (6) via a link (8) between a sender (2) receiving a packet traffic and a receiver (4) at a transmission bit rate (R) is controlled. A traffic offer to the sender (2) is predicted on at least one time scale. Based on the prediction, a target transmission bit rate which is adapted to the predicted traffic offer is determined. The transmission bit rate (R) is changed to the target transmission bit rate at a change rate defined so that a clock recovery (42) of the receiver (4) remains phase-locked to the changing transmission bit rate.

According to the method, packets 30a, 30b, 30c of the one or more client signals are received at an ingress node of the network. Timing information characterizing the timing of the received packets 30a, 30b, 30c is determined and the received packets 30a, 30b, 30c are mapped into a container 33. The container 33 and the timing information are transmitted via the network. At an egress node of the network, the packets 30a, 30b, 30c are extracted from the container and the packets 30a, 30b, 30c are timed for further transmission based on the transmitted timing information.
