The present invention relates to a vehicle safety system comprising an external safety system for protecting a pedestrian, and a device for activating the external safety system (13, 14)the device being connected to a pre-crash sensor system (10, 11) and an in-crash sensor system(16). The device is arranged to perform an object classification of a first signal (A1) from the pre-crash sensor system (10, 11). The device is further arranged to determine a threshold (T1, T2) for the in-crash sensor system(16) as a function of the object classification; where the device is arranged to set a first threshold(T1)as a function of a first signal (A1) indicating no object detected or an object classified as a pedestrian; and to set a second threshold(T2), higher than the first threshold (T1), as a function of a first signal (A1) indicating an object classified as a non-pedestrian; and that the device is arranged to compare a second signal (A2) from the in-crash sensor system (16) withthe threshold (T1, T2), whereby the external safety system (13, 14)is activated if the set threshold (T1, T2) is exceeded.

A pedestrian-protecting air bag arrangement is disclosed for a motor vehicle having a bonnet (10) pivoted at a forward end for pivoting upwardly and forwardly. The arrangement comprises an air bag (12) located beneath the bonnet adjacent a rear end thereof, and designed, in its deployed state, to extend across the width of the vehicle windscreen and upwardly at least partially over the windscreen, the air bag (12) comprising a central region (30) and lateral wings (18) on either side of the central region. In order to ensure correctly sequenced behaviour of the air bag (12) when activated, the bag is packed in such a way that, in the pre-deployed, stowed state, the lateral wings (18) of the air bag are folded or rolled towards the central region (30), to lie beneath the central region (30), whereby the folded lateral regions (18) are locked initially by the central region of the air bag when the latter is inflated, but become unlocked as the central region (30) of the bag inflates, allowing the lateral regions (18) also to inflate to extend over the windscreen and the A- pillars.
