A method for structural fixed pattern noise reduction in a video stream comprises: for each target pixel (116) in a first image frame (114) defining a first target pixel patch (118) including the target pixel (116), defining a first search area (120) comprising the first target pixel patch (118), for each pixel in the first search area comparing a first pixel (124) patch around the pixel with the first target pixel patch (118), using the pixel when calulating an average for the target pixel (118) if the similarity of the pixel patch (124) and the first target pixel patch (118) is within a first threshold, and, in a second image frame (114') localizing a second target pixel (114'), defining a second pixel seach area (120') comprising the second target pixel (116'), for each pixel in the second search area (120') comparing a second pixel patch (124') around the pixel of the second search area (120') with the first target pixel patch (116), using the pixel of the second search area (124') when calculating an average of the first target pixel (116) if the similarity of the second pixel patch (124') and the first target pixel patch (118) is within a second threshold, wherein the first image frame (114) and the second image frame (114') are separate image frames in the videostream, and wherein the location of the second target pixel is estimated from the location of the first target pixel(116), combined with camera directional data.

There is provided a method for pre-processing a video stream for subsequent motion detection processing. The method comprises receiving a video stream of images, wherein each image in the video stream is represented by a first plurality of bits; enhancing the video stream of images by, for each image in the video stream: comparing the image to at least one previous image in the video stream so as to identify pixels where the image differs from the at least one previous image in the video stream, enhancing the image in those pixels where the image differs from the at least one previous image in the video stream; and converting the enhanced video stream of images so as to produce a converted video stream of images for subsequent motion detection processing, wherein each image in the converted video stream is represented by a second plurality of bits being lower than the first plurality of bits.

There is provided a method and a controller for controlling a video processing unit to facilitate detection of newcomers in a first environment. The method comprises: capturing a thermal image of a human object in the first environment, the first environment being associated with a first climate; calculating, based on the thermal image, a thermal signature of a portion of the human object; determining that the human object has entered the first environment from a second environment when the thermal signature of the portion of the human object deviates from a predetermined thermal signature associated with the first environment, wherein the second environment is associated with a second, different, climate; and controlling the video processing unit to prioritize the human object over other human objects when processing video frames depicting the human object together with the other human objects.

A method of detecting a need for recalibrating a microbolometer is disclosed, said microbolometer comprising a plurality of sensor pixels. The method comprises the steps of: for a predetermined number of monitored sensor pixels monitoring a response signal (S01), storing a first statistical measure (S02) representative of response values read over a first time period, storing a second statistical measure (S03) representative of response values read over a second time period, said second time period being later than said first time period, comparing said first statistical measure to said second statistical measure (S04), and if said second statistical measure differs from said first response range by more than a predetermined change, determining that said microbolometer needs recalibration (S06). A system for detecting a need for recalibration is also disclosed, as well as a method and a system for recalibrating a microbolometer.

Shape detection is used in thermal images for detecting objects of one or more object classes. The temperature of a detected object is used to verify that the detection is correct, by determining if a temperature characteristic of a detected object is within a predetermined temperature interval of the relevant object class. Environmental conditions, such as rain, snow or fog, impacting the amount of thermal energy reaching a thermal camera from an object, are taken into account by collecting temperature statistics for the detected objects, and using these statistics to update the temperature interval.
