    Abstract: The catheter within body structures includes a shaft and a core member to facilitate moving the catheter through a lumen, and to reduce the likelihood that the catheter will kink or bend improperly. This metallic core member extends from the hub to some point distal, and may extend to the distal tip. The distal end of a catheter balloon may be secured to the core member during manufacture. The core member has a ziggzagged or helix shape at the proximal end which is friction fit into the hub lumen, and may have a pointed tip that embeds in the hub inner wall. During manufacture, the core member can be secured within the hub with reduced reliance on adhesives or molding and may be press fitted into the hub lumen. The catheter is more easily manufactured, and has an increased volume and reduced obstruction by adhesive in comparison with other methods of securing the core member.

    Abstract: A balloon catheter in which its distal tip is precisely positionable in order to control movement of the catheter through tortuous vasculature and especially through the lumen of a deployed stent is disclosed. The distal tip of the catheter is rendered radiopaque, at least at its distal-most end, to enable visualization of the position of the catheter and to facilitate placing the catheter in the desired position.

    Abstract: The invention provides a protective coating which improves the durability of a medical device, especially a dilatation balloon, and also addresses the problems which can arise if a scratch, abrasion or puncture occurs, in for instance the balloon wall. The coating is discontinuous in nature, thus preventing bubbling or aneurysms in the outer protective coating if the underlying devices, i.e. balloon wall, becomes damaged and allows inflation medium to escape. The discontinuous coating comprises a polymeric material and may preferentially be a 'waffle' pattern, a 'strip' pattern of a pattern having circular perforations.
