The present invention discloses a pattern reading apparatus with a variable reading frequency in converting an optical pattern into electrical signals, capable of avoiding the flickering or beat in the image by the regulation of the reading frequency in reading an optical pattern with a frame frequency such as the pattern displayed on a cathode ray tube or a liquid crystal display unit. The pattern reading apparatus is usable as a reader for a blind person, by representing the optical pattern, read with the regulated reading frequency, with tactile display vibrating corresponding to the pattern.

Selecting switches (106) are provided near a convertor (f01) for converting an optical image into an electric signal, thereby enabling the electric signal before or after it was stored to be efficiently selected. A plurality of convertors (101) may be provided and when an electric signal is not output from one of the convertors, the other convertors can be used. The analog electric signal output from the convertor is binarized by a reference level signal before it fluctuates. An electric power consumption when the apparatus is not used is prevented by power controller arranged near a tactile sensing display (104).
