A magnetic toner is formed of magnetic toner particles each comprising at least a binder resin and a magnetic iron oxide. The magnetic toner is provided with improved developing performances by realizing an appropriate surface-exposure state of the magnetic iron oxide, which is represented by a wettability characteristic in methanol/water mixture liquids of the magnetic toner such that it shows a transmittance ' of 80 % for light at a wavelength of 780 nm at a methanol concentration in a range of 65 - 75 % and a transmittance of 20 % at a methanol concentration in a range of 66 - 76 %.

Disclosed are a magnetic toner for developing an electrostatic latent image comprising magnetic toner particles containing a binder resin of 100 parts by weight and a magnetic substance of 20 to 150 pars by weight, and an apparatus unit and an image forming method for employing the magnetic toner. A frictional electrification property is such that the absolute value of the frictional electrification amount relative to an iron powder of 250 mesh-pass to 350 mesh-on is 25 to 40 mc/kg. Assuming that for particle distribution of the magnetic toner a weight-average particle diameter (D 4 ) for the magnetic toner is X (µm) and that a count% in a count distribution of magnetic toner particles that have a diameter of 3.17 µm or smaller is Y (%), expressions (1) and (2) are satisfied: -5X + 35 ≤ Y ≤ -25X + 180 3.5 ≤ X ≤ 6.5 Sphericity (ψ) of particles is equal to or greater than 0.80 and a product (σ r × H c ) of remanence [σ r (Am 2 /kg)] and coercive force (H c (kA/m)] of the magnetic substance in a magnetic field of 795.8 kA/m (10k oersted) is 10 to 56 (kA 2 m/kg).

In a toner comprising toner particles which comprise toner base particles containing at least a binder resin and a magnetic material, and inorganic fine particles, the toner base particles have been obtained through a pulverization step; and, the toner base particles having a circle-equivalent diameter of from 3 µm or more to 400 µm or less as measured with a flow type particle image analyzer have an average circularity of from 0.935 or more to less than 0.970; and the toner base particles have an average surface roughness of from 5.0 nm or more to less than 35.0 nm as measured with a scanning probe microscope. The toner can enjoy less toner consumption per sheet of images, can achieve a long lifetime in a smaller quantity of toner, and has superior developing performance in any environment.
