The outermost tubes (50) of a heat exchanger core (20) have not previously been cooled as adequately as the interior tubes (50) by the flow of air between the fins (40) and the tubes (50). In this invention a cover (80,85) is connected over the edges (45) of the fins (40) defining a respective one of first and second end surfaces (70,75) and is spaced from the air inlet surface (60) of the core (20). Consequently, the outermost tube (50), which is nearest the cover (80,85) is cooled substantially to the same degree as the other tubes (50). In one example, about a 5% increase in the thermal efficiency of the core (20) is attained.

A heat exchanger (10) has first and second cores (12, 14) arranged in a "V" configuration with the inner, directly adjacent ends being spaced apart a preselected distance for purging debris. The first core (12) has an axis "A" and a plurality of fins (40) defining an inlet surface (18) and an outlet end (44). An elongated tube (46) extends through the fins (40) and has a transverse axis "T" oriented with respect to axis "A" at a preselected angle to increase air flow and reduce pressure drop across the core. The second core (14) has a plurality of fins (40) defining an inlet surface (22) and an outlet end (44). The first and second core fins (40) are truncated at the corner defined by the respective inlet surface (18, 22) and outlet end (44) to expose more core surface area for a given frontal area.

Un echangeur de chaleur (10) possede un premier et un second noyaux (12, 14) disposes en "V" avec les extremites internes, directement adjacentes espacees de part et d'autre d'une distance predeterminee pour la purge de debris. Le premier noyau (12) possede un axe "A" et une pluralite d'ailettes (40) definissant une surface d'entree (18) et une extremite de sortie (44). Un tube allonge (46) s'etend au travers des ailettes (40) et presente un axe transversal "T" oriente par rapport a l'axe "A" avec un angle predetermine pour augmenter l'ecoulement d'air et reduire la chute de pression sur le noyau. Le second noyau (14) possede une pluralite d'ailettes (40) definissant une surface d'entree (22) et une extremite de sortie (44). Les ailettes du premier et du second noyau (40) sont tronquees au coin defini par la surface d'entree respective (18, 22) et une extremite de sortie (44) pour exposer une plus grande surface de noyau pour une surface frontale donnee.
