The plunger (30) has a first guide mechanism (76) for permitting linear movement within the main bale chamber (26) that allows a pivoting of an end face (66). A second guide mechanism (78) includes a slot (64) allowing the plunger (62) to be oriented so that the second edge (70) of the end face (66) compresses crop material first and then subsequently pivots to compress equally and finally to have the second edge (70) leading the first edge (68) of the end face (66) away from the bale (54) to provide greater bale compression without additional force.

Each chopper/blower unit is positioned below a respective row unit and has a discharge outlet. At least two of the chopper/blower units have a discharge chute connected with the discharge outlet, and a deflector positioned at a discharge end of the discharge chute. Each deflector is independently adjustable to direct crop material toward a windrow formed under the combine harvester.
