A method for manufacturing an aqueous suspension of calcium carbonate by grinding in an aqueous medium in the presence of an acrylic grinding aid agent and of an alkaline carbonate salt. These salts enable the quantity of grinding aid agent used to be reduced, for an equivalent level of performance in terms of rheology and granulometry of the suspensions. The method includes a first step of manufacture of the alkaline carbonate salt within the aqueous solution of acrylic polymer itself, through the addition of alkaline hydroxide and bubbling of carbon dioxide.

The invention relates to the use, in a method comprising a first step of grinding into a calcium carbonate aqueous medium, of an acrylic polymer having a molecular weight between 8,000 g/mol and 15,000 g/mol and a mole content less than 20% in polymer chains having a molecular weight less than 3,000 g/mol. Said method, comprising a second step that is a concentration step, leads to an aqueous suspension with an increased slope factor, which improves the opacity of the coated paper obtained from said suspension.

The invention relates to the use of at least on polymer containing at least one monomer selected from acrylic acid or methacrylic acid or mixtures thereof and at least one monomer which is the maleic anhydride as a dispersing and/or grinding aid agent in a fabrication process of a dispersion and/or an aqueous suspension of mineral materials, wherein the molar ratio r (acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid : (maleic anhydride) is strictly confined to the range between 2:1 and 0.1 : 1. Another object of the invention consists in the aqueous dispersions and suspensions of mineral materials thus produced and the use thereof in the fabrication of plastics, paper and paintworks.

The invention relates firstly to a new mineral material treatment method using at least one amphoteric polymer, to make these mineral materials effective as an agent to reduce the quantity of natural and organic colloids in the manufacturing process for a sheet of paper. The second purpose of the invention is the treated mineral materials obtained using the method according to the invention. The third, fourth and fifth purposes of the invention consist of dry powders, aqueous suspensions and pellets of treated mineral materials obtained using the method according to the invention. A final purpose of the invention is the use of mineral materials treated using the method according to the invention as an agent to reduce the quantity of natural and organic colloids in the paper sheet manufacturing process.

The invention concerns the use of water soluble homopolymers and/or copolymers of acrylic acid with one or several acrylic, vinyl or allyl monomers as dispersion agents of aqueous suspension of mineral particles derived from a mechanical and/or thermal upgrading step following a wet-process grinding step not using dispersant and with low dry-matter concentration. The invention also concerns said aqueous suspensions and their uses in paper making, paint, fillers for rubber and synthetic resins, detergent and cleaning formulations, ceramics, drilling fluids, cements, plasters and other uses in civil engineering, the building sector and public works.
