The invention concerns a method for focusing acoustic waves useful for obtaining an image of a field to be observed in a dissipative heterogeneous medium (2, 3) around which acoustic transducers (T1-Tn, T'1-T'm) forming an imaging network and a target network. The method consists in following a training step during which pulse responses from the medium are measured between each transducer (Ti) of the imaging network (5) and several transducers (Tj) of the target network (6); deducing therefrom reference signals to be emitted by the transducers of the imaging network to produce a focused acoustic pulse in each transducer of the target network, then cumulatively, in determining reference signals to be emitted to focus an acoustic pulse on predetermined points in the medium. Said reference signals are stored and used subsequently to generate an acoustic image of the medium.

The invention relates to a method for optimising wave focalisation in an area of interest (6) of a medium (4), the waves being emitted by a source network (3) to the medium (4) via an aberration insertion member (5) for inserting an initially non-determined phase deviation. The method of the invention comprises using M-1 successive modifications of the emitted wave, each resulting in a disturbance. According to the invention, the M disturbances are measured in the area of interest (6) at each modification of the phase and/or amplitude distribution, and these measures are used for deriving optimal focalisation characteristics that maximise the disturbance generated in the area of interest (6).

An ultrasonic lens (9) is placed between the emitting ultrasonic probe (2) and the aberrating barrier. The ultrasonic lens is calculated using a model of the medium including a map of propagation properties of the ultrasonic waves obtained by real imagery of the medium, such that when the ultrasonic probe emits a predetermined ultrasonic wave (13a), said predetermined wave produces the predetermined objective ultrasonic wave field in the medium.

The invention relates to a non-invasive method of obtaining an acoustic wave field in the brain (19) using a network (17) transducers, which is positioned outside the skull (14). The inventive method comprises an information acquisition phase, whereby a three-dimensional image of the porosity of the skull at every point is used to determine, by means of digital simulation, the elementary acoustic signals to be emitted by the transducers in order to obtain the acoustic wave field in the brain. After said information acquisition phase, the transducer network is used to locate, by means of ultrasonography, the relative position of the transducer network on the skull and to provide a precise position for said network.
