The present invention relates to a process for the direct dehydrogenation of a hydrocarbon, comprising the step of contacting said hydrocarbon with a catalyst at a temperature comprised between 400°C and 700 °C, wherein said catalyst consists of a carbon active phase that is coated on γ-AI2O3 support, said γ-AI2O3 support being a host matrix for said carbon active phase. It also relates to a process for the preparation of a composite comprising a carbon active phase coating on a γ-AI2O3 support, said γ-Al2O3 support being a host matrix for said carbon active phase, said process comprising the step of treating a support consisting of γ-AI2O3 at a temperature comprised of from 550°C to 650°, under an ethane stream for a period of at least 1.5 hours or under a stream of ethylbenzene, ethane or ethylbenzene diluted in an inert gas stream. Other subject-matters of the invention are a composite comprising a support consisting of γ-AI2O3 and a carbon active phase, wherein said γ-Al2O3 support is a host matrix for said carbon active phase, obtainable by a process as defined above, and the use of the composite, for oxygen- and/or steam-free direct dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene.

The present invention refers to the use of a metal-free carbon material for converting plastic into C 2 -C 4 olefins and/or other hydrocarbons, under direct induction heating at temperature less than or equal to 800 °C. The present invention also relates to a process for converting plastic into C 2 -C 4 olefin and/or other hydrocarbons, comprising a step of reaction under direct induction heating, with a metal-free carbon material as defined in anyone of the claims, at temperature less than or equal to 800 °C.
