Novel diaralkyldichlorosilanes of the general formula (I) (wherein R 1 and R 2 each represent hydrogen or C 1 to C 4 alkyl, R' and R 4 each represent C 1 to C 4 alkyl, p and q are 0 to 3; provided that R 1 and R 2 are not hydrogen when p and q are 0) can be made from dichlorosilane and the corresponding styrene compounds and are useful as monomers for producing polysiloxanes and as intermediates for synthesizing organosilicon compounds.

Novel substituted phenethyldichlorosilanes have the general formula wherein R is an alkyl group having 3 to 20 carbon atoms or a phenethyl group. Such compounds are produced by reacting a monosubstituted dichlorosilane RHSiCl 2 at a temperature of 30 to 200°C with styrene using a catalytic complex of platinum and a phosphine compound. Hydrolysis and polymerization of the substituted phenethyldichlorosilanes (I) yields polysiloxanes with good heat-resistance and other desirable characteristics.
