摘要： A liquid crystal display device is made by disposing an STN cell (16) in which nematic liquid crystal (6) having a twist angle in the range from 180° to 270° is filled and sandwiched between a first substrate (1) having a first electrode (3) and a second substrate (2) having a second electrode (4) at the center, providing a retardation film (13) and an absorption-type polarizing film (8) outside the second substrate (2) in order, and providing a reflection-type polarizing film (10) and a light absorbing film (11) outside the first substrate (1) in order. This enables a metallic silver background due to the reflected light by the reflection-type polarizing film (10) and display in black or in color by light passing through the reflection-type polarizing film (10) being absorbed in the light absorbing film (11) or only light of specific color being reflected.

摘要： An STN liquid crystal element (20) comprises a first substrate (1) with a first electrode (3), a second substrate (2) with a second electrode (4), a color filter (7) formed on the first or second substrate (1, 2) and consisting of a plurality of color filters, and 180 - 270 DEG twisted nematic liquid crystal (6) between the first and second substrates. A phase plate (12) and a polarizer (11) are provided outside the second substrate (2), which becomes the front side of the STN liquid crystal element (20), while a diffuser layer (13), a reflective polarizer (14) and a light-absorbing layer (15) are provided outside the first substrate (1). The color filter (7), having a thickness of 0.5 - 2.0 microns, comprises color resist composed of photosensitive resin with 5 - 20 % pigment and has a maximum transmittivity of more than 80 % and a minimum transmittivity of 20 - 50 %.

摘要： An STN liquid crystal cell (20) comprises a first substrate (1) having first electrodes (3), a second substrate (2) having second electrodes (4), a color filter (7) consisting of filters of a plurality of colors provided on one of the first and second substrates (1, 2), and a nematic liquid crystal (6), which is aligned at a twist angle of 180° to 270°, sealed between the first and second substrates. A retardation film (12) and a polarizing film (11) are provided in order on the outside of the second substrate (2) which is the visible side of the STN liquid crystal cell (20), and a diffusing layer (13), a reflection-type polarizing film (14) and a light absorbing layer (15) are provided in order on the outside of the first substrate (1). Further, the color filter (7) is made of a color resist containing 5% to 20% pigment in a photoresist to have a maximum transmittance of 80% or more, a minimum transmittance of 20% to 50% and a thickness of 0.5 µm to 2.0 µm.

摘要： A colorful liquid crystal display device which enables multicolor display and a driving method which drives the liquid crystal display by utilizing an ordinary black-and-white liquid crystal driving IC. An ordinary character display part (41) which provides single-color display and a mark display part (42) which provides multicolor display and exhibits colorfulness are provided in the display unit of a double-refractive color type liquid crystal display device.
