The present invention relates to a novel catalytic system for polymerisation and, specifically, for preparing conjugated diene polymers with a polar function at the chain end. Said catalytic system is made up of a metal salt of a rare earth metal and, as an alkylating agent, an organometallic compound based on a metal from the second or thirteenth column of the periodic table, capable of transferring a polar function to the diene elastomer during the conjugated diene polymerisation step. The novel catalytic system reduces the steps required for synthesising a functional diene elastomer at the chain end, while guaranteeing optimal functionalisation, advantageously near or equal to 100%.

The invention relates to a novel organometallic compound containing a divalent metal belonging to the second column of the periodic table, useful as an alkylating agent in a rare earth metal catalytic system. Said novel compound has formula (I), where: M is a metal belonging to the second column of the periodic table, selected among Be, Mg, Sr, Ba and Ra; R1, R2, R3, R4 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl or aryl substituents, optionally bonded together to form at least one ring system or at least one aromatic ring; R and R' denote alkyl or aryl substituents; L is a Lewis base; x is an integer from 0 to 4; m is an integer greater than or equal to 0; and n is an integer greater than or equal to 1.
