摘要:
A method is provided of forming an elongated glass article, comprising providing a tubular glass handle having a mandrel protruding from one end thereof, rotating the combination of mandrel and tube, and directing toward the rotating mandrel and an end portion of the tube a stream of glass particles comprising SiO 2 doped with at least 15 wt. % B 2 O 3 while reciprocating said mandrel and tube with respect to said stream to build up a porous glass coating. The mandrel is then removed from the porous glass coating and tube to form an assembly of handle and tubular porous preform. The porous preform is heated to consolidate it to a dense glass preform having an axial aperture, and to fuse the dense glass preform to the handle. NF 3 is flowed through the aperture while maintaining the temperature of the consolidated preform above 600°C but below that temperature which would cause the substantial elongation of the blank.

A method of forming a glass sheet comprises: (a) forming a ribbon of glass from molten glass with a pair of forming rollers; (b) reducing horizontal temperature variability of the ribbon of glass to be 10 °C or less across 80 percent of an entire width of the ribbon of glass before the ribbon of glass cools to a glass transition temperature; (c) controlling a cooling rate of the ribbon of glass while the ribbon of glass moves vertically downward within a setting zone such that the ribbon of glass has a first average cooling rate before the ribbon of glass cools to the glass transition temperature and a second average cooling rate after the ribbon of glass cools to the glass transition temperature, the first average cooling rate being less than the second average cooling rate; and (d) separating a glass sheet from the ribbon of glass.

Disclosed is a method of making a polarization retaining single-mode optical fiber. Longitudinal grooves are formed on opposite sides of a cylindrically-shaped core preform having a glass core (11') surrounded by cladding glass (12'). The core preform is inserted into a glass tube, the tube is shrunk onto the core preform, and the interface between the core preform and the tube (27) is fused to form a solid preform having longitudinal apertures (14') on opposite sides of the core. An etchant gas is flowed through the apertures to enlarge the apertures into holes having a substantially round cross-section. Inserted into each aperture is a stress rod formed of glass having a coefficient of expansion different from that of the cladding glass. The resultant draw blank is drawn to form a single-mode optical fiber having a core that is subjected to a stress-induced birefringence.

A method is described which comprises providing a preform having a glass core surrounded by cladding glass, a pair of longitudinal apertures on opposite sides of the core, and inserting into each of the apertures a stress rod of glass having a coefficient of expansion different from that of the cladding glass, thereby forming a draw blank. The space between said stress rods and the surface of the cladding glass that forms the apertures is then evacuated, and each of the stress rods is fused to the surface of the aperture into which it has been inserted. The resultant blank is drawn to form an optical fiber.
