A fluid jet print head includes an orifice plate (22) defining a plurality of orifices (24) from which fluid emerges, and a stimulator means (26) mounted in contact with the orifice plate for vibrating the orifice plate to produce a series of bending waves. The bending waves travel along the orifice plate and break up the fluid into drops of substantially uniform size and spacing. The stimulator means includes a stimulator member (28) of a length equal to an integer half wavelength of acoustic waves of a frequency f passing therethrough. The stimulator member contacts the orifice plate at one end of the member. A pair of piezoelectric crystals (32, 34) are mounted on opposite sides of the stimulator member and , when driven by an A.C. drive signal, cause acoustic waves of a frequency f to pass along the member. The member is supported at a nodal plane. The member may enter the print head manifold and contact the orifice plate internally, with a seal arrangement (46) being provided at a nodal plane along the member.

A fluid jet print head includes an elongated body (10) having a length substantially greater than its other dimensions and defining a fluid receiving reservoir (16) in one end. An orifice plate (12) is secured to the body (10) over the reservoir (16), and includes a row of orifices (18) from which fluid, supplied under pressure to the reservoir, emerges as a fluid filament. The print head includes a support (34) for engaging the body (10) intermediate its ends. Further, the print head includes a pair of piezoelectric transducers (36), bonded to the exterior of the print head body on opposite sides thereof, for alternately elongating and contracting in phase in the direction of elongation of the print head body. This causes mechanical vibration of the body and break up of the fluid filament into drops. Alternately, the piezoelectric transducers may be driven out of phase such that the print head body flexes.

At least portions of the exposed surfaces of such electrodes, used to charge passing ink drops, are overcoated with a continuous coating substantially free of cracks of a semiconductive material doped to have a resistance, at room temperature, when measured perpendicularly to the electrode array, of between 10 8 and 10" ohms, such material being essentially insoluble in the ink.
