A method for halftoning a multi-channel digital color image having an x,y array of color pixel values, wherein at least two color channels are similar having substantially the same color but with low- and high-densities, includes the steps of: providing a matrix of dither values for each group of similar color channels wherein two or more of the matrices of dither values are designed jointly to minimize a visual cost function; for at least one group of similar color channels, forming an inverted matrix of dither values by subtracting the value of each element of the matrix of dither values for that group from a predetermined maximum value, associating the inverted matrix of dither values with one of the low- or high-density color channels, and associating the matrix of dither values for that group with the other low- or high-density color channel of that group; for each color channel of the multi-channel digital color image modularly addressing the matrix of dither values associated with that color channel using the location of a pixel in the digital color image to obtain ad addressed dither value; using the addressed dither value for each color channel, together with the pixel value for the corresponding color channel, to determine an output halftone image value for each color channel.

A method of multipass inkjet printing of images in response to digital images having code values includes providing an inkjet printer capable of printing at least two ink drops at each printing location during different passes, including a printhead which can select at least two different ink drop sizes, and selecting a number of passes for producing an image and providing a print mask having mask values which, in each pass, sequentially corresponds to predetermined pixels and, in response to the mask values and the code values of such pixels, operates the inkjet printer to select the ink drop size for each pixel in each pass so that the inkjet printer produces an image.

An error diffusion method suitable for producing an output image from an input image having a set of digitized continuous-tone pixels is disclosed. The method includes the steps of computing an image activity signal; computing a set of activity weights from the image activity signal; computing a filtered input value for a digitized continuous-tone input pixel responsive to the activity weights and computing a filtered output value responsive to the activity weights for each of the possible output levels. The method further includes selecting the output level in response to the filtered input value and the filtered output value for each of the possible output levels according to an error criterion; determining an error signal between the filtered input value and the filtered output value for the selected output level; and weighting the error signal and adjusting the filtered input values for nearby pixels which have not yet been processed.

A system wherein already-existing computing and memory resources in an electronic camera are used to process an image for printing. Rather than duplicating, in printers, computing and memory resources that are already in digital cameras, significant computing and memory resources need exist only in the camera. A digital camera can support many different printers, each with its own set of parameters such as for example print size, pixel size, colorimetry, sensitometry, and artifacts compensation. Printer parameters are uploaded from the printer to the camera to provide a basis for image processing specific to the associated printer, whereby compensation may be done for variations in the printer characteristics which may occur as a result of printer manufacturing variations, and further so that compensation may be done for different media types which may be installed in the printer.

A process for altering the phase of banding artifacts of a printing device deals with the separation of low frequency luminance modulation into higher frequency colored modulation. The individual writing element that is used to print each line of an image is changed between the color channels. In the process, each channel is printed so that original image data are registered. Lower frequency neutral bands are then converted to higher frequency colored bands to reduce visibility of the artifacts.

Ink jet printing apparatus and method for improved accuracy of ink droplet placement on a receiver medium (30) by compensating for jet direction variabilities between ink nozzles (45). More specifically, the invention is an ink jet printing apparatus and method for printing an output image on a receiver medium in response to an input image file having a plurality of pixels. The apparatus includes a print head (50) and a nozzle integrally attached to the print head. The nozzle has a droplet placement characteristic, for example, undesired placement of the droplet on the receiver medium, associated therewith. A waveform generator (230) associated with the nozzle generates an electronic waveform (80) comprising a plurality of electronic pulses (90) to be supplied to the nozzle for adjusting the droplet placement characteristic. In this manner, the invention compensates for the undesired droplet placement characteristic, so that the droplet (47) is accurately placed on the receiver medium irrespective of physical variabilities between nozzles.
