    摘要: A caliper assembly (12) for a sliding caliper disc brake of the open back type wherein the brake pad assemblies (22) are positioned on opposite sides of the brake disc by a pair of washerhead bolts (46) which pass at their free ends through bores (28a) in one side wall (28) of the caliper for threaded engagement with nuts (48) and which pass adjacent their head ends through radially outwardly opening slots (30a) in the other side wall (30) of the caliper with the washerhead portions of the bolts received in counterbores (30c) which are formed in the outer face of the other caliper side wall (30) and which communicate with the slots (30a) in that side wall. With the described slot/ counterbore construction, the bolts may be moved axially by an amount to withdraw their free ends from the bores in the one side wall (28) and withdraw their washerheads (46a) from the counterbores (30c), whereupon the portions of the bolts adjacent the bolt heads may be moved radially outwardly through the slots (30a) in the other side wall (30) while the remainder of the bolts, together with the brake pad assemblies (22) carried thereby, may be moved radially outwardly through the open back (32) of the caliper.

A shaft (36), either driven by the engine or driving a load (31), carries a clutch member (14) arranged for fluid engagement with a body member (12) for the transmission of torque therebetween when electroviscous fluid is disposed in an operating chamber (45) defined by complimentary shear surfaces (40 and 44) in the clutch and body members. The clutch and body members are electrodes, connected to a source of high voltage potential (86), which establish an electrostatic field within the operating chamber to selectively vary the characteristic viscosity of fluid flowing there­through.

    摘要: A single-acting, clearance sensing slack adjuster for brakes is provided. The slack adjuster includes a displaceable brake actuation means (28), a rotatable driving membre (52), a rotatable intermediate member (60) and a rotatable driven member (56). The driven member is in driving relationship with a rotatable ad- justement member (50) which is rotatable in a given direction to advance a brake friction member (32) to maintain the running clearance (38) within predetermined limits. Means (76-80) are provided to rotate the driving member in the slack decreasing direction of rotation in response to greater than predetermined movement (82) of the brake actuation means A first coil clutch (20) couples the driving and intermediate members while a second coil cluth (72) couples the intermediate and driven members. One clutch (72) delivers torque in the given direction in its low torque transmitting capacity direction of rotation and that torque capacity is less than is required to rotate the rotatable actuation members when the brake friction members are engaged.
