A method for simultaneously producing difluoromethane (F32) and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (F134a) in gas phase in the absence of any catalyst or metal surface by pyrolysing chlorodifluoromethane (F22) at a temperature above 500 °C in the presence of hydrogen. Depending on the operating conditions, the method also enables a major proportion of either F32 or F134a to be achieved.

In order to isomerize a hydrofluorocarbon with a certain thermodynamic stability (HFC 1) into hydrofluorocarbon with greater thermodynamic stability (HFC 2), the hydrofluorocarbon HFC1 is subjected to a thermal treatment in the presence of hydrogen at a temperature higher than 500 °C. This method which does not require the use of a catalyst is applicable in particular to the isomerization of 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane into 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane.
