Lubricating compositions are described, which are capable of guaranteeing an improvement in the fuel economy performances of internal combustion engines, also without resorting to specific additives conventionally known as friction modifiers or reducers. The above compositions envisage the presence of particular deterging additives selected from the group of sulfophenates and particular anti-wear additives having the general formula ZnP2S4O4R4. The above lubricating compositions have been conventionally identified on the basis of friction coefficient measurements under suitable kinematic conditions which are such as to reproduce 'hydrodynamic', 'elasto-hydrodynamic, 'mixed' and 'boundary' lubrication situations. The efficacy of the compositions of the present invention in terms of fuel economy has been demonstrated by engine tests according to engine oil qualification standards.

Polyalkenyl succinimides which can be obtained with a process which comprises: a. reacting a reactive medium-high molecular weight polyalkene with maleic anhydride at a temperature higher than 180°C; b. carrying out the reaction thermally for a time sufficient for having a conversion of the terminal vinylidene groups higher than 10%; c. completing the thermal reaction in the presence of a reaction accelerator consisting of a Lewis acid; d. reacting the reaction product of step (c) with an amine which has at least one primary aminic group capable of forming an imide group.
