The hydrotreating of petroleum feedstock is improved by using a layered transition metal catalyst, a mixture of such catalysts or a stacked bed of transition metal catalysts that has a selected ratio of edge to rim sites sufficient to provide a product having a predetermined sulfur and nitrogen content. In another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method for selecting a transition metal catalyst system for use in hydrotreating nitrogen and sulfur containing feedstocks to provide a hydrotreated product having a predetermined nitrogen and sulfur content and at a predetermined reaction residence time, which method comprises: selecting the amount of sulfur and nitrogen to be removed from a given feedstock by hydrotreating to obtain a product having a predetermined nitrogen and sulfur content; determining the variation in the reaction kinetics for sulfur and nitrogen removal of the given feedstock by hydrotreating with a transition metal catalyst of varying edge to rim ratios; selecting, for a predetermined reaction residence time, that ratio from the varying edge to rim ratios of the transition metal catalyst that provides the requisite sulfur and nitrogen removal to provide the product of predetermined sulfur and nitrogen content.

The present invention is based on the discovery that certain transition metal containing complexes thermally decompose to form solids containing the transition metal, sulfur and carbon and that these transition metal, sulfur and carbon containing solids are particularly suitable as catalysts for hydrodesulfurization, hydrodenitrogenation and aromatics hydrogenation. The transition metal complexes that are thermally decomposed to novel catalysts are complexes of the type represented by the general formula ML n ₃, wherein M is selected from Mo, W, Re and mixtures thereof, L is a dithiolene or aminobenzenethiolate ligand, and n represents the total charge of the metal complexes, and is 0, -1, or -2.

A novel slurry hydrotreating process is described in which a hydrotreating catalyst of small particle size is contacted with petroleum or synfuel feedstocks, particularly gas oils, for hydrogenation of the aromatics contained in such feedstocks. The slurry hydrotreating process employs a high temperature stage followed by one or more low temperature stages.

Catalysts comprising a carbon-containing sulfide of molybdenum or tungsten are prepared by contacting, in the presence of sulfur, hydrogen and a hydrocarbon, ammonia and ammonium substituted molybdate, thiomolybdate, tungstate and thiotungstate salts at a temperature of from about 200-600°C. These catalysts are useful for hydrotreating reactions. In a preferred embodiment, these catalysts will be promoted with certain transition metal sulfides, such as cobalt sulfide, which results in catalysts having greater activity then conventional catalysts such as cobaltmolybdate on alumina.
