The invention relates to platelet-shaped pearlescent pigments which are coated with at least one mixed inorganic/organic layer for improving their application properties, and in this case, particularly, their mechanical properties, and to a method for the production and use thereof. Said mixed inorganic/organic layer comprises at least one partially cross-linked inorganic metal oxide component and an organic component, which is at least one organic oligomer and/or polymer which is covalently bonded, at least in part, to the inorganic network via crosslinkers. The coating is provided with at least one mixed inorganic/organic layer which contains, at least in part, an inorganic network encompassing one or several inorganic oxide components, and at least one organic component which at least partly represents an organic oligomer and/or polymer that is covalently bonded at least in part to the inorganic network via one or several organic network formers. The invention also relates to a method for producing said type of pearlescent pigments.

The invention relates to aluminum pigments which are at least partly coated with lubricant. Said aluminum pigments have a) a water spreading coefficient ranging between 40,000 and 130,000 cm2/g, b) an average thickness h of less than 100 to 30 nm, said average thickness h being calculated from the water spreading coefficient and by counting the thickness from the h50 value of the cumulative passage distribution by means of scanning electron microscopy, c) a relative range of the thickness distribution Δh of 70 to 140 percent, which is determined by counting the thickness by means of scanning electron microscopy and is calculated according to formula (I) based on the corresponding cumulative passage graph of the relative frequencies, d) a form factor d50/h of more than 200, e) a peak-to-valley value of 0.30 to 0.9, said peak-to-valley value being calculated from the specific surface that is measured according to the BET method and the spreading coefficient in accordance with formula BET value/2 x spreading coefficient. The invention further relates to a method for producing said aluminum pigments and uses thereof.
