When error is detected in the PERT program (PPM) that is being executed, a question (M2) is indicated on a display screen (CRT) as to whether the PERT program be corrected together with an error message (M1). When it is designated to effect the correction, the correction screen is displayed and the PERT program is executed all again upon designation of correction completion.

The control data (FLRj) of each file includes the record start position of file, a block number which, when the file is stored over a plurality of blocks, indicates how many blocks there are before said block, and a volume number which, when the file is stored in a plurality or recording media, indicates how many recording media there are before the one in which the block is stored.

When it is attempted to define a profile that consists of a combination of a first profile (1) and a second profil (2) which have been defined already, it is determined if the first profile (1) and the second profile (2) have an intersection or not based upon the designation of the first profile (1) and the second profile (2). When they do not have an intersection, error is displayed to represent that the combination profile is not possible. When they have an intersection, it is determined whether at least either one of the first profile (1) and the second profile (2) is open. When none of them is open, closed profiles consisting of the combination of the first profile (1) and the second profile (2) are successively drawn so as to be discriminated from other profiles. A desired closed profile is selected when it is just drawn and, thus, the combination profile is defined.

Based on said system program name, the firmware checks whether the system program is for a keyboard (K1) having a load key (LK); if ''YES'' the system program in the system floppy (14) is read into a RAM (11c) provided the load key is depressed, and if ''NO'' the system program in the system floppy (15) is read into the RAM regardless of the load key. Thereafter, under the control of said system program a keyboard control firmware (K2) converts the data input from the keyboards (K1, K2) into a code based upon the data conversion software corresponding to said keyboard.

An automatic programming method of preparing NC data efficiently and automatically from a part program even when undefined symbols are included in the part program. The processor in an automatic programming apparatus automatically prepares NC data by successively decoding and executing the statement of the part program that is read from the RAM. When it is determined that an undefined symbol is contained in the decoded statement (S4), the processor displays the undefined symbol on the screen and requests to define the symbol (S6). When a definition sentence of the undefined symbol and an input instruction for permitting the input of the definition sentence are manually input (S7), the definition sentence is automatically inserted just before the statement that includes the undefined symbol, and the statement of a part program that follows the definition sentence is executed (S7, S8).
