The upper and lower surfaces of the top wall (1) contacts a rotary cam and the end of a stem of an engine valve respectively. A hard metal layer (3,4) is formed at the upper and lower surfaces of the top wall to increase strength thereof, thereby increasing wear resistance and durability of the tappet.

To manufacture a tappet in an internal combustion engine, a tappet rough body which comprises a cylindrical portion (2) with an upper wall (1) and an annular side wall (6) is moulded by press processing of metal powder, such that the upper wall (1), the cylindrical portion (2) and the annular side wall (6) become larger than the tappet to be manufactured in the axial size. After sintering the tappet rough body, it is re-compressed to form the final tappet.

Oxygen atoms are diffused into the Ti alloy to form an oxygen diffusion layer of Ti-O solid solution, thereby increasing wear resistance of the valve. A poppet valve in an internal combustion engine may be made of such Ti alloy.

In a method of manufacturing a tappet for an internal combustion engine, powdered metal "P" filled in a cavity 22 of a die 21 is compressed by lower and upper punches 23 and 25 to form a body and a top wall of the tappet, and is sintered. During compression molding, frictional resistance of powdered material increases density of the upper and lower ends of the tappet, thereby improving strength and wear resistance.
