    摘要: A wireless communication method used in a system comprising a base station and a plurality of fixed or mobile subscriber stations, the base station maintaining connections with each of the subscriber stations by performing wireless communication in units of frames, and within each frame, allocating resources for data transmissions and signalling in the wireless communication system. The method involves providing, in each frame, a new dedicated shared channel for use by the subscriber stations to report a connection quality to the base station. To save bandwidth in the system, the resources allocated to the shared channel are less than the total resources needed for every subscriber station to report individually within the same frame. The method includes, in the base station, allocating resources to the shared channel, dividing the shared channel into a plurality of reporting opportunities, and transmitting requests for reports to the subscriber stations; and in the subscriber stations, responding to said requests by randomly selecting one of said reporting opportunities and sending a report on the channel quality. Preferably, the responding step is conditional upon the channel quality experienced by each subscriber station meeting a threshold condition set by the base station and included in the requests.

    摘要: A transmission method for use in a wireless communication system, the system comprising a subscriber station, base station and intermediate apparatus in the form of one or more relay stations, the subscriber station and the base station being arranged to transmit and receive information via the intermediate apparatus, at least the subscriber station being required to perform a network entry process in order to connect to the system. The method comprises, in the intermediate apparatus, determining whether the subscriber station has initiated a network entry process with the intermediate apparatus, for example by receiving a ranging code from the subscriber station. Upon such a determination, the intermediate apparatus notifies the base station of the fact whilst continuing to conduct the network entry process with the subscriber station. The base station responds with a return message to the intermediate apparatus, as part of a guidance process conducted from the base station to the intermediate apparatus so that the intermediate apparatus can manage completion of the network entry process. The method has particular relevance to multi-hop wireless systems based on standards such as IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX).

The relay station then combines the detected MAC PDUs to form a MAC PDU of at least one new packet and transmits the new packet to the base station (BS). In this way, bandwidth on the uplink from the relay station to the base station is conserved.
