    摘要: A bar-code reader has an optical scanner (2) which optically scans a bar code (1) to obtain signal strength of light reflected from black bars and white bars of the bar code (1). An extracting unit (5a) then extracts edge data, which includes a plurality of edges and the signal strength of which changes corresponding to a change from a black bar to a white bar and vice versa, and an edge-emphasizing unit (5f) emphasizes edge data of an edge that satisfies a predetermined condition. A judgment unit (5h) is then used to make a ternary judgment of each edge based on the edge emphasized to obtain a ternary result, and a decoder (5i) decodes bar-code characters from the ternary result.

A notification unit notifies that the shelf life of the article has expired upon determination by the term expiration check unit to the host apparatus (200). By performing its own expiration check, the bar code reader reduces the load on the host apparatus.

The image capturing apparatus includes an image sensor 30 for capturing an image of the object by receiving reflected light, distance-measuring light-emitting devices 52 for irradiating the object with spot light, and a control circuit 90 for driving the distance-measuring light-emitting devices, detecting the spot light positions of the distance-measuring light-emitting devices from an image captured by the image sensor 30, and obtaining the distance to the object. The image sensor 30 provided for capturing an image of the object can be used as a photodetector device for distance measurement. With this, it becomes unnecessary to separately provide a photodetector device for distance measurement, which enables miniaturization of the image capturing apparatus, as well as cost reduction.
