The side rails (28, 30) align, accommodate and guide a forward fixture (4) of the cot towards the front end (85) as the cot (14) is rolled within the vehicle to retain the forward fixture (4) adjacent the front end (85) at least vertically and laterally. The channel (86, 88) accommodates and retains a rearward fixture (6) adjacent the back end (80) at least vertically and laterally. A powered ambulance cot and methods of raising and lowering the cot as well as loading and unloading the cot are disclosed. The cot includes a support frame and legs, each leg having a wheel. An actuator of an actuation system interconnects the frame and legs, and is configured to effect changes in elevation of the frame relative to the wheel of each of the legs. A control system controls activation of the actuation system, and detects both the actuator at a first location relative to the frame, where the first location is remote from a second location and which situates an end of the actuator that is remote from each wheel closer to the frame, and a presence of a signal requesting a change in elevation of said support frame to thereby cause the legs to move relative to the support frame.

Provided is a cot fastening system which fixes and holds an emergency cot to the floor of a transport vehicle. The emergency cot has wheels and a rearward fixture mounted thereon. The cot fastening system comprises a fastener device for mounting to the floor of the transport. The fastener device has a longitudinal length with first and second ends that define a loading direction therebetween. The first end is wider than the second end. The cot fastening system also comprises a pair of side tracks which are spaced apart with respect to each other and which support and releasably retain the wheels. Finally, the cot fastening system comprises a channel that extends along the longitudinal length in the loading direction such that it is centrally arranged between the side tracks. In this way, the channel releasably secures the rearward fixture via activation of a blocking or catch member which is operable between locked and unlocked conditions.
