Methods and apparatus to upgrade and provide control redundancy in process plants are disclosed. Redundancy is distributed within the process control system by using free resources of other active control devices and/or within the active control device itself. Input(s) (305) from one or more field devices (130-132,145 and/or 146), and/or from a control algorithm and/or control component (310-312). These control components (310-312) may be implemented and/or carried out by one or more controllers. The allocation of the control components (310-312) to controllers and the choice of amount of redundant copies of a particular control component may be static and/or dynamic. If the assignment is dynamic, the allocation may be adjusted, for example, based on the number of available controllers and/or the current and/or historical processing loads of the available controllers.
