The invention relates to a device (5) for detecting momentary sleep. The device (5) has a video recording device (10) for monitoring a person (15) and an eye region of the person (15) in a video-based manner. The video recording device (10) is designed to record an image sequence of the person (15) and the eye region and to output said image sequence to a threshold ascertaining device (20). The threshold ascertaining device (20) is designed to derive one or more thresholds (80, 85) which are individually adapted to the person (15) from the image sequence. The device (5) further comprises a threshold analyzer (25) which is designed to decide whether the person (15) has momentarily fallen asleep on the basis of the one or more individually adapted thresholds (80, 85). One or more individually adapted thresholds (80, 85) are used in order to ascertain whether the thresholds (80, 85) are exceeded within the actual time curve of the eye opening and thus to ascertain the occurrence of momentary sleep.
