Disclosed herein are phenol oxidizing enzymes obtainable from species of Stachybotrys which are useful in modifying the color associated with dyes and colored compounds, as well as in anti-dye transfer applications. Also disclosed herein are biologically-pure cultures of strains of the genus Stachybotrys, designated herein Stachybotrys parvispora MUCL 38996 and Stachybotrys chartarum MUCL 38898, which are capable of naturally-producing the novel phenol oxidizing enzymes. Disclosed herein is the amino acid and nucleic acid sequence for Stachybotrys phenol oxidizing enzymes as well as expression vectors and host cells comprising the nucleic acid. Disclosed herein are methods for producing the phenol oxidizing enzyme as well as methods for constructing expression hosts. Disclosed herein are enzyme compositions comprising phenol oxidizing enzymes obtainable from species of Stachybotrys.

Novel acid-stable and thermo-stable enzymes having α-1,4 hydrolytic activity and a α-1,6 hydrolytic activity which are derived from strains of the genus Sulfolobus. These enzymes are capable of expressing high levels of α-1,4 hydrolytic activity, including the maximum α-1,4 hydrolytic activity thereof, at highly acidic pHs of between about 2.5 and about 4.5. These α-amylases are further capable of expressing high levels of α-1,4 hydrolytic activity, including the maximum α-1,4 hydrolytic activity thereof, at high temperatures of between about 90 °C and about 120 °C. Particularly disclosed herein are such enzymes which are derived from strains of the species S. acidocaldarius and, in particular, Sulfolobus acidocaldarius DSM 639. Modified starch degradation (liquefaction and saccharification) processes using these novel enzymes are also disclosed herein.
