A process for joining ceramic superconductor fibres (20) with a channel (47) to fabricate a superconductor wire includes concertedly drawing the fibres (20) and the channel (47) together to feed the fibres (20) into the channel (47). A flowable solder paste (86) is continuously dispensed into the channel (47) over the fibres (20). the combination of channel (47), fibres (20) and solder paste (86) is then subjected to a rapid rise in temperature which melts the solder (86). The molten solder (86) is then frozen to encase the fibres (20) in the solder (86) and attach the solder (86) to the channel (47) to create a superconductor wire.

A multifilamentary superconducting cable (10) has two parallel spaced-apart guide wires (12,14). A first layer (16) of mutually parallel superconducting filaments (18) is woven partially around and between the guide wires (12,14) in a transposed braid. Likewise, a second layer (20) of mutually parallel superconducting filaments (22) is woven partially around and between the guide wires (12,14) in a transposed braid. Thus, the two layers (16,20) overlap each other as the respective layers (16,20) pass between the guide wires (12,14). the two superconducting layers (16,20) and two guide wires (12,14) are enclosed in a helical copper duct (24), with the guide wires (12,14) being oriented within the duct (24).
